Hey all,

I’ve had the worst luck with flake tobacco, I’m most always on the move when smoking a pipe and can never find the time to rub out my flakes (the only method I’ve found that works for me). Is there a way to dry out the flakes themselves so I can put them in my jacket, rub, and smoke them out and about? Thanks!

I would suggest a foldable tobacco pouch with a latex lining. Just rub out the tobacco flakes and throw them in your pouch for the day. I leave tobacco in a pouch like that for up to a week with no issues.

I’d prefer jarring whole flakes as I like the flavours flakes produce as they age. You could break a few down at a time, or I don’t see why a whole flake couldn’t be put on a sheet of paper or whatever and over a piece of plastic or screen or something to allow for air flow, it would dry like that….

Have you tried “fold and stuff”?

Chasing Embers has a great YouTube video on it.

Flakes burn so well, and so much slower with the fold and stuff method for me. I’ve stopped breaking flakes down like I used to.
I’ve tried and tried but most flakes I’ve tried with are just far too wet to get lit, specifically solani burley flake

I usually pull out a flake and let it dry for 30-45 min before the fold and stuff. I also make a little “kindling” on top with a small amount of rubbed out finer pieces.

Don’t give up on it. Dry it for however long it needs with your ambient humidity and be patient. Fold and stuff has been clutch to enjoying Gawith and other flakes.

Good luck!

Also…. Don’t try and over stuff things. For the Gawith blends and a larger Peterson bowl one “flake” is enough. Getting the density right is part of the deal.

We are no different. It may just take some additional drying and practice. You can do it.

Thanks for the tip on drying the flake itself out and folding. I’ll give that a try tonight!

I think smoking a flake (at least if we are talking virginia flake, but perhaps less so with burley flake) needs some more attention and care. The packing in itself might be easy, but there is a bit of a learning curve in smoking it the best way, that might need some patience. If you want a more easy method, rubbing out is probably better. But another recommendation is to fold and stuff in the pipe in the evening, and letting it sit in the pipe to dry over night. I do that sometimes up to 12 hours before I pick up the pipe to smoke it. I also think it helps to dry a flake more slowly, not only "surface-dry".
