[/quote]revs: I would add Amphora to your buying list but it's been discontinued in the USA. Maybe track down some Sail Yellow or Green if you can get it. I found some old pouches of Yellow mummifying behind a supermarket counter. With a little remoistening, they turned out to be pretty great, similar in style to my dearly departed Amphora.
These are the Canadian OTC's (along with Captain Black); I have some Amphora Original Blend sitting in the back of my stash purchased prior to my discovering U.S. based etailers. If you would like to give it a try, shoot me a PM.

I can't bring myself to buy Sail (or more Amphora, for that matter); considering the cost is $24.99 for 50g.

I enjoy Carter Hall, Walnut, and SWR Aromatic quite a bit. I've also had PA, Captain Black Original (White Pouch) and Middleton's Apple and they are fine, but I would add the first three to my personal rotation before the others. As for blending, I bought a rather large, HUGE, Oom Paul pipe from Marty Pulvers the other day and decided to make it an aromatic pipe. I was looking for something to fill the spectacularly large bowl and ended up with a blend of equal parts PA, Captain Black and P&C's Butternut Burley. Turns out, it was FANTASTIC!!

In the past my choice would have been no contest: Edgeworth Ready Rubbed. Now that it is discontinued, my pick would be Carter Hall.

Captain Black (white) is my standby emergency blend. I recently tried the "gold" blend and found it too peppery for my taste.

Two OTCs that I keep on hand are Carter Hall, SWR, and SWR aromatic. They are good for simple everyday out and about bowls.

What I like about Gold (or MV1000, Fader's 14K-all the same thing) is that it's a little less aromatic, and I can actually taste Virginia in an inexpensive aromatic blend.

@brew Yes I suppose, but I lumped the two SWRs together. I wasn't going to make the distinction, but I did.

Amphora huh, I don't believe you can get that in the US at all anymore. I ran into an older guy at the Tobacco Mall a couple months ago who was trying to hunt some down. I know that my local tobacconist has a blend called Euphoria that is supposed to be a match for Amphora.
