I had not heard about this till now, and I just read an article while watching a video. So far the news in incorrect about a few things. You do not need to be registered with the FAA as a drone operator; only if using a drone to make money in some way. Also, why do they just discount that they "can't" be drones?
As someone who is just getting into the drone hobby, you do have to register any drone with the FAA if over .5 lbs, and there are a ton of micro drones out there. But, even so, more than half of all drones are never registered, especially the ones given to kids as gifts. There are also thousands of attachments for them, many being powerful lights. Professionally, they can be used top assist S&R teams by creating almost daylight lighting for ground teams.
Drone scan also be programmed with a laptop to operate in synch. like the ones that flew over Arizona that still has the UFO chasing freaks all spooked. And, they can also have really good avoidance software that makes them so if another aircraft or drone approaches it will skirt around evasively.
There are also tons of hobbyist getting into building their own drones for a variety of purposes. I am not sure why the news is jumping straight to the whole, "it can't be drones" headlines, except to just be sensationalists.
