I prefer a pipe that passes a cleaner so that I do not have to break it down that often. I was very surprised that Ser Jacopo's full bents passed a cleaner easily so have been on the lookout for them specifically for that reason. I don't know about Peterson still on the fence they seem to have a tougher draw than my other pipes not really a complaint but I wonder if they are drilled smaller than others, like my Savinelli's seem to have a more open draw to each his own obviously but I prefer a more open draw. Anybody got the facts on this?

To all of you woodworkers on the forum. In an attempt to drill out the hole into the tobacco chamber I drilled into the moisture chamber through into the bottom of the pipe. Must have been the whisky ! I have put an ill fitting wooden plug in to the hole that I drilled but it is not the optimum solution. Any ideas on repairing my little Petey and fixing my screw up ?

If it is a system pipe then yes the stem is drilled with a taper 5mm to 1.5 mm by design

Graduated Bore
The unsung hero of the true System stem, Peterson's graduated bore mouthpiece tapers from a 5mm opening at the tenon to 1.5mm at the P-Lip button. So what does it do? According to a 1987 Peterson ad, "the unique graduated bore of the mouthpiece made the suction 15 times weaker when it reached the tobacco chamber. So all the bitter tars and moisture float into the reservoir and could never reach the mouth." Again relying on physics and a pipesmokers natural habits, this 1894 patent is simple yet effective, essentially slowing the speed of the smoke as it leaves the tobacco chamber and allowing it to pool in the condensation chamber before entering the stem.

Thanks for the info, what happens in the condensation chamber? does that eventually dry out by itself when you leave the pipe to rest?

How in the hell is a pipe cleaner supposed to travel through a Plip down a bent pipe stem into an angled bore.

Peterson deliberately makes military mounts on their pipes.

The straight Peterson bulldogs I own pass a pipe cleaner.

I personally think passing a pipe cleaner is more bullshit nonsense pipe lore we have to retire and move on from.

Pass a pipe cleaner or not. The things we stack in our heads is ridiculous when it comes to pipe smoking.
My stems come off! 😀

I agree. Mid-smoke I may need to and do so on straight pipes on the odd occasion, if it’s a bent I assume a little poking with the skinny bit of the pipe tool is one of its purposes and use it for adjusting via access from the top of the chamber, but rarely ever feel the need.

Reminds me of the joke about a guy complaining about hand-cutting wood. His buddy suggests a chainsaw and so he buys himself one. A week later his buddy asks if the chainsaw is helping. The guy exclaims, heck no it’s worse. So the buddy checks the gas and bar oil then after a few strokes fires up the saw. The man is astonished and exclaims “what’s that noise?”

LOL, reminds me of the guy who went to the drugstore to buy some latex based personal products before a big night out - clerk said that will be $8.00 with tax, guy is astonished, "Tacks, I thought you pulled 'em on!"

Yes.
most people give it a swab out with a bent pipecleaner or a qtip before emptying the ash from the bowl, then leave the stem off overnight to allow the sump(condensation chamber ) to dry.
It is best to keep on top of this as I have had the pleasure of having to clean estate pipes that have been neglected.
