Hello everyone,
At the moment I am only smoking from 3 different MM corn cob pipes, but at my local rite aid I noticed they had Dr Grabow briar pipes for sale (along with a few MM cobs).
The briar pipes were priced at around $30-$35.
I was curious if anyone has purchased a Dr Grabow briar and how they smoke?
Thanks

I have over 30 Grabow's and they are great smokers. If you've never smoked a briar pipe before, just remember that they take a little while to break in.

My Dr. Grabow is a Royalton bent bulldog and I have enjoyed it a lot, for about two years now, maybe three. I bought a Royalton for the acrylic rather than plastic stem, and what I feel is a somewhat better finish. These pipes are designed to use 6 mm filters (Dr. Grabow, Medico, or Savenelli balsa all work) or if like me you prefer no filter, you can try smoking with no filter in place, or do as I do and use a Savenelli adaptor -- inexpensive, six for five dollars or so. The adaptor focusses the flavor a little more, if you like that. I think Dr. Grabow pipes are mostly excellent, and the Royaltons seem well above their price level to me. They're good smokers, but not so expensive you feel like you can't take them in the car or traveling. They're nicely finished and have a distinctly U.S./American look, one of the last of the great U.S. marque briar factory pipes.

I bought four of them in the 1970s, and they have held up well over the years.

These look useful. I've had Grabows for years, always solid unpretentious pipes. I was looking at once of their "Big Pipes" because the normal size is a bit bitty for me.

My first pipe was a Dr. Grabow and it must have done something right, as I'm still smoking 25 years later. I recommend that you take the filter and gently place it in a near by trash receptacle and then enjoy your Dr, Grabow to its fullest. They are better pipes than they're price indicates.

Thankyou so much everybody! I guess my mind is made up for my first briar then. The price was so good so I had to make sure :)

I've got 4 Grabow pipes 2 vintage and 2 current production. Of the current production I think the Royaltons and Omegas are the best of the lot. All four of my Grabows smoke great though.

I own six Grand Dukes, four Savoys, two Royal Duke bulldogs, and a Freehand. Two are unsmoked; the rest are great smokers and most are reasonably attractive, except for one of the Savoys. It was the most misbegotten train wreck of a pipe I have ever seen slip through QC. For a regular factory making real pipes, I mean, not the cheap Chinese shit you see on e-Bay, which is intended to either wean people off pipe smoking with aversion therapy, or kill us outright with their lead-based bowl coatings. One Grand Duke had to be returned due to a cracked shank, straight from the factory. Their QC is not perfect, but 12 out of 14 purchases were to my satisfaction. FWIW, one of the bulldogs and one of the Savoys are definitely on the list of my 5 favorite briars.
