Been clenching and breath smoking this week--Eureka! What a revelation. The bowl stays lit all the way down, no dottle left in the bottom, and flavor! The pipe still gets a bit hot, so I've gotta slow down a little more, but I think I'm onto to it. Wow.

My problem is that my salivary glands go into hyper drive for some reason, and I have to remove the pipe to keep from dueling in it.
I have the same problem. Glad it's not just me.

It's a process... :D
I'm also working on clenching more, although my fondness for churchwardens makes this a little more difficult than it otherwise might be. I got a Zippo for outdoor smoking, so I'm not as perturbed by relights in the wind as I have been with matches, and my salivary glands seem to have calmed down after several months, so that's a plus. Still working on the cadence, as I too seem to have picked up the habit of multiple puffing as opposed to sipping more sparingly.

I have a similar problem: my charming and lovely wife will occasionally ask for a toke and will drag on that sucker like it's a coffee stirrer in a milkshake. Puts the fire out every time. Not that I'm complaining.

RE: Clenching
I have the same salivary problem as you gentlemen, and I find no matter how hard I focus on breathing out through my nose, the bowl looks like a chimney.
Will just have to keep working at it I suppose. Glad to know I'm not alone, and I'm sure it will just click at some point.

As Roth and Kas say, it takes practice and patience. It took me a long time to get this right, and I have been a pipe smoker a very long time.
I used to puff like a chimney. No longer. Slow and low. I just sip it. If my pipe goes out because I got interested in something and forgot to sip, then I just relight and go back to sipping. No big deal. I ain't in a contest or race.
Slow and low.

Try to clench with the pipe deeper in your mouth so you can swallow the saliva without dripping it back into your pipe. Good to breathe back into your pipe a little but it's more unconscious. Certain tobacco's just burn too hot and I simply don't smoke those because I hate them. Virginia no 1 is a good example of a foul hot burning terrible smoke. The relight is the tastiest puff so nothing wrong with relighting!

After years of clenching, I find I still salivate. Less so than before. I just take the pipe out every now and then, wipe the bit, and continue. Clenching is worthwhile because it really forces you to slow down and nurse the ember. Just like nursing your drink at the bar. Slow sipping. The reward are the flavors you'll experience. Sometimes I'll revisit tobacco blends that years ago I passed up. Lo and behold, now they've become favorites.

I tend to double puff from being a long time cigar smoker. I do notice it burns hotter when I do that. Now I've just tried to slow down and enjoy!
