Thanks for the reply, I think trial and error will help too. When I first started I was dreadful at packing, so it’s a plus it burns well now.
it's a bit tricky getting all the little parts just right. Trust me it's wonderful when you hit that point where it's not something you think about and just purely reflexive.

Keep in mind that the lower portion of the tobacco in your chamber has been “filtering” the upper portion of the chamber and concentrating the flavors at the bottom. Sometimes this is delicious and sometimes it needs to be dumped.
Also dry your leaf please.

I look forward to that point, although if truth be told I’m enjoying the journey. Did the rookie thing starting with aromatics, moved onto my first English blend last week, truly a game changer for me. Im going to try something with perique after a few more English blends.

IMO, it's very important to build a cake all the way to the bottom. It's tricky and takes time, you don't want to scorch the airway. In any event, the only way to build a cake at the bottom is to smoke to the bottom. I learned this lesson from a friend that always smoked his pipes to the bottom and wondered why he put himself through the pain of smoking to the bottom. Then I checked out one of his pipes, cake all the way to the bottom! So I started to do this and they smoke sweet as a nut all the way down😁

The old trials and suffering before the reward. Where possible I will smoke what I can as close to the bottom. If it works it will be worthwhile.

When I started smoking pipes 55 years ago I had big issues with tongue bite and wet dottle. I convinced myself that smoking fresh ”wet” tobacco would save my tongue. With some experience I ”discovered” that new tins are over moist to preserve shelf life, not my tongue. Hot steam will burn your tongue big time.
Dry your leaf and dry it some more and your tongue will thank you.

This is something I rarely do. Mostly just seeking instant gratification😁 I don't want to take the time to dry it, just fill and go. But I do see some advantages and some GH flakes surely need to be dried. I just wish I had all the tins of dried out tobacco I've tossed over the years.

aromatics are the worst for beginners. They're the most temperamental type of tobacco. Even if they don't bite they lose the most flavor from smoking fast or packing too tight. English is a good starting point, since they'll taste full flavor even if you don't have perfect technique.
I think part of the drop in pipes popularity might be the whole aromatics being the most popular and touted as the beginners style.

I can completely agree there. I nearly gave up on smoking a pipe when I was smoking aromatics. The bite was terrible and it didn't burn well at all leading to excessive puffing to try compensate the ten or so re-lights. I found that I’ve throughly enjoyed English blends and look forward to trying more.

There are two times I get bite. Smoking a new aromatic for the first or second time and if I get so distracted I pay no attention to what I am smoking.

it's probably the best part of being on a forum like this. Knowing you've helped a few people expediate their full enjoyment of the hobby/addiction.
Well you’ve been very helpful and I thank you for it. If you’re ever interested I’ll let you know how I found the perique blends etc when I get to them. Thank you again.
