I have a Czech tool that came with a craigslist grab-bag of pipes, tobaccos and accessories, but the tamper surface area seems too small. I feel like it would be too fiddly to get an even, light tamp with something so small.
I've had good success with the one cheap, round-headed pipe nail that was thrown in with my first ever B&M tobacco purchase. The head is the right diameter for me and I like the flattened, spade-like tip for scraping out dottle and ash. Despite the beauty of some of the custom pipe tools out there, I think I will always stick with the trusty, versatile pipe nail.

I have 4 Czech tools (one for each car and the RV) and a batch a pipe nails.
I loose the nails all the time, but my wife finds them under a chair, end table, on the kitchen counter, or on the picnic table. She bought me two beautiful marble tampers which I consider to nice to use and therefore haven't misplaced.
