I see people with headphones or handsfree devices, some of them looking down to the small screen totally oblivious of birdsong, trees, bicycles, car horns, crosswalks and other things you encounter when outside.
I've seen parents on bikes looking down at the screen when bicycling amidst traffic - with their infant child on the carrier.

One could say this behavior is self-centered or reckless, but who am I to judge?
They might have some important stuff to keep an eye on, like the next cute cat meme or their favorite celebrities morning farts.
You see it in restaurants, also. Groups of people sitting together to eat and are totally oblivious to one another.

This forum is itself a social media platform, it's just directed at a specific audience and we have tight moderation to stop people from spamming hate toward each other.
Twitter is Pipes Magazine but with unlimited politics.

As long as the internet has existed political forums have also existed, and they've always been the most toxic things you can possibly read.

The only change in the last decade is people started to carry a device 24/7 that feeds you an infinite amount of intellectual toxicity.

And it gets better. The first generation of kids whose brains developed ENTIRELY in social media are proving to be significantly abnormal in a number of ways. And none of them good ways.

For anyone interested, here's the overview:

Screen Shot 2023-07-05 at 9.42.36 PM.png

And here are the particulars:

The Grand Summary? Induced schizophrenia.

What's schizophrenia? It's when external and internal experience are detached from one another. They feel separate and distinct instead of a combined whole. Each defines its OWN reality.

The problem is the rules of one "world" clash with the rules of the other. (Which always ends up happening.)

It ain't pretty.

Keep your kids and grandkids away from that shit. Brain growth is NOT reversible.

So when an entire society is propagandized continually about nearly everything, through distortions, omissions, and outright lies, for years and years and years, to the point where actual reality differs significantly from their perceptions, I guess that would be mass induced schizophrenia.

Well according to the news Threads opened overnight...and now has 10m+ sign ups!

Mr. Z said that keeping the platform "friendly... will ultimately be the key to its success". Keeping it friendly? Good luck there chum

"But Twitter chief Elon Musk responded: "It is infinitely preferable to be attacked by strangers on Twitter, than indulge in the false happiness of hide-the-pain Instagram."

So he admits that Twitter is a hostile environment...interesting.

Apparently Mr. Z anticipates 1b+ sign ups after a while which I suppose doesn't surprise me.

Perhaps what @Brian64 says above about the winner takes all might be a good proposal.....assuming the cage fight actually takes place.

Regards,

Jay.

Postmodernism.
Feelings triumphs facts, occured events described as experiences, your truth versus my truth, there is no objective truth yadayadabingbong.

However, I don't believe in a coherent scheme as narrated by diffuse demagogues on mentioned social media.
The moon landing did happen regardless of some popular talking heads charisma.
There is no such thing as alternative facts.

That's the "different worlds that have different content" part of it.

What I didn't make clear is how, to a schizophrenic, what goes on "inside" their head is perceived as separate and distinct from what physically happens around them. It feels like they are two people living different lives simultaneously.

(Schizophrenia falls on a spectrum, of course, but when the disconnect is severe, men in white coats and institutionalization is indicated because their outward behavior becomes so erratic, unpredictable, and illogical that it's dangerous.)

Anyway, it turns out that kids who have grown up surrounded by abstract interaction (screens) from an early age develop that same split/disconnect from physical reality as a result. It "tests" the same as naturally occurring schizophrenia.

Welcome to the 21st century.

It is all very complicated. Mr. Z built a business off an idea he knocked off from those very odd Winklevoss twins. Musk has built quite a few things of use to society. In terms of social media just getting rid of the thing would probably do society in general a lot of good. When it first showed up I thought it was an interesting way for Joe Q Lunch box to make his voice heard and to speak truth to the many vested interests in our society. Now that it has been captured by the same sort of people that like to lecture us and tell us what is good for us whilst engaging in the most wanton hypocrisy behind closed doors I think a case can be made for banning it. The recent legal cases out of Louisiana about 'de-emphasizing' views that do not comport to the social platforms or certain politicians world view or in some cases outright suppression serves to remind us why we have a constitutional in this country. As Humphrey Bogart used to say 'The problem with the world is everyone is a few drinks behind'.

So the big challenge for Zuck is: Do we “keep it friendly” (censorship and gaslight) or do we just let humans be humans? Cognitive Dissonance or more of the same behavior that got us to this point in the first place?

The problem is that U.S and Western Society is essentially screwed. Let's take 'canceling' a person as an example. Todays 20 somethings grew up in a world of early stage social media. The likes of such sites as 'My Space' which allowed you to build an entirely insulated world consisting of people only you liked and agreed with on whatever topic floated your boat. Anyone you didn't agree with you could exclude from your 'My Space' page. The cancel culture and trigger warnings all stem from being able to build a self centered echo chamber during your developmental years and nothing more than the logical extension of something like 'My Space' or any other social media echo chamber. By following this course you are only exposed to the ideas you agree with which are then amplified in small social setting. What the powers that be have noticed is that if you seed young minds with foolish ideas they will unquestioningly repeat as the plain unvarnished truth. Given time the vocal minority then proceeds to suppress the majority view by creating the fiction that the majority are out of step with the echo chamber which they perceive as being the true majority. Here is an example of very early Government thinking on this line of reasoning..

More the merrier. The more there are, the less any 1 has influence over everything. Let there be 100! All with a split demographic of interests and none with all.

"Canceling" does not exist. It's just another example of idiots making up words for something they think they invented that in reality has existed since the dawn of time. Ever since man championed capitalism, if you offer goods and services and say or do something that pisses people off, those people have the right to no longer use your goods and or services. We talk about "canceling" like we should be free from the consequences of our actions. While 1A does protect your right to drive down Harlem Ave standing in the back of a truck wearing a Klan Robe and shouting racial slurs through a bullhorn, it does not mandate that people must like you for doing it. You are free to do and say whatever you want within the bounds of the law, just as others are free to call you a f*ckwit for doing and saying those things. Don't want others to stop using your services? Then stop broadcasting your opinion that nobody asked for...

I for one am absolutely thrilled that I have yet another outlet to get into arguments with people I don’t know about topics I know little to nothing about and that no one will ever read or care about. This is a giant leap forward for humanity and all you Luddites are missing out
