I became a pipe smoker when I was 16 due to the encouragement of my stepfather who was and still is a heavy pipe smoker (10 bowls a day). I still join him for a pipe every time I visit him. Does pipe smoking help you bond with your father or stepfather?

When I was about 14 my father had a short spell of pipe smoking. I was so impressed that I started pipe smoking myself when I was 16. So yes, I often think of him when I smoke my pipe.

My father was a cigarette smoker but my great grandfather smoked a pipe. I don't remember him all that much, but from what my mother has told me he smoked his pipe pretty regularly. He smoked Dr. Grabows and his preferred blend was Prince Albert. Everytime I smoke some Prince Albert in my Dr. Grabows I think of him and it brings me closer to a man I wished I'd known more.

No. My father smoked cigars when I was a child, quit before I reached my teens, and was more than a bit disappointed when he discovered I smoked. He thought he'd raised me better and that smoking indicated I had made a poor decision which was also entirely selfish.
He didn't love me any less. Still, the disappointment was there. Both in me and himself.

Only in my mind. My dad was alive when I first smoked a pipe in my early thirties, and he smoked a pipe much of the day, but somehow I never brought the pipe when I visited from out of state. But now I remember him often when I light up a pipe -- all the moves, memorized in childhood, you bet.

tbrad, yes, kids and city slickers completely miss the explosive horror of smoking in the barn. Hay is probably less flammable than gasoline, but not by much.

I'm with sable on this one. I'll be closer to my dad if smoking a pipe kills me.
My dad smoked cigarettes when he was young, as I have seen pics of him doing so. At some time before I was born he quit and became quite an anti cigarette smoke person. Never heard him complain about pipe smoke, but he once told me when I was a kid, that anyone that smoked (cigarettes) in public, would also probably urinate in public. He died 15 years ago at age 90, but not from tobacco smoke!

Mine has been an interesting experience.
For as long as I can remember, my father, uncle and godfather have smoked cigarettes together (though only on occasion), whilst both of my grandfathers, according to my parents, smoked pipes at one time. Therefore, they all seem to have an appreciation for tobacco, even as cigarette smokers!
They were all supportive of me when I picked up the pipe, and my uncle even promised to let me introduce him (he was gifted a pipe years ago by a friend).
As such, smoking (in the way a pipe smoker does) has been a part of the male-side of my family forever, though I don't tend to think of my pipe smoking as carrying on a tradition...

My grandfather smoked a pipe, he smoked Prince Albert and Middleton's Cherry Blend mixed 50/50. I remember the Aroma well, and I smoke the same thing every once in a while in his memory. I never smoked a pipe while he was alive so I'm not sure how he would feel about me smoking a pipe now, but I like to think it would make him smile. I'm having one of his favorite pipes restored now. I guess do feel closer to him when I smoke my pipes.

My dad doesn't smoke but my father-in-law just took up the hobby with me. We smoked some Dunhill Nightcap and Morning Blend together a while ago today outside. We liked it much better than any aromatic we've tried!

No. My dad is a "reformed" smoker turned worst kind of anti tobacco nazi anyone would care to meet.
I remember his pipe, filled with Borkum Riff Whiskey as a child. He turned to cigarettes in the 70's and was bullied into quitting by his 2nd, 3rd and current wife.
Too bad, as he was much more fun to be around before the transformation.

Only in my mind. He and his brothers smoked pipes, but he quit in the 60's. He really doesn't have an opinion on the matter. He's 86, and worked with wood all his life, and he's more interested in looking at the pipes themselves.

Further away. He used to make fun of me for smoking a pipe. As much as an ass as my father was, he had a good brother who was a pipe smoker.
