Thank you so much for that article; I didn't know. But as the article goes on to say,Big Pharma is keeping insulin going for millions because of their research on DNA etc etc. Not to mention statin drugs, but if I go on, I'm sure I'll make some mistake attributing big corps to things they may have not specifically done.
By the way, what do you teach?

Allen - and the reason I made the point was not to dispute your point that big pharmacy companies have, in fact, done some good, but rather, to draw attention to the fact that academic institutions have also done a great deal of good as well. There is a tendancy in some circles to disparage higher education - references to self-centered professors ensconced in their ivory towers who have no idea how the "real world" works. Like anything, of course, there is some truth to those views, but it is a stereotype that is more often than not, false. Academic institutions have, in fact, done a great deal to heal and advance the human condition.

No worries. I have heard them all. Everyone hates lawyers except, in most cases, their own lawyer, the person who is charged with defending their interest.

I agree 100 percent with you, Peck. And I certainly didn't mean to suggest higher learning institutions were 'lesser' in their pursuit of medicine, never mind their position for training minds to be the future scientists, researchers, artists and artisans, etc.
