I am also of the same mind as a few others, in that I do not plan and simply buy what calls to me in person. I tend not to buy many pipes, hell in 2015 I purchased one cob and that was it... incidentally a cob is the only pipe I've ever bought online sight unseen. I would rather feel a pipe in my hand before buying it.

I have several styles and makers that I have a preference for but I buy what catches my eye and gives me the bug.

I have been following a plan of only buying No American artisan pipes since August 2012. I have only puchased one lone Castello since then and the rest (40 something) are all of the above. I have also stuck to group 4-5 sized pipes( except 2 6's) and have stuck to a short list of classic shapes. My collection is now very focused and am planning to add a few Ryan Alden pipes while the getting is good. Just grabbed my second one today and will add some pics on another thread.

I collect American hand mades only and I leave things to chance, mainly. There are carvers whose pipes I would like to add to my collection, but only when they're available, and only if they have a shape that screams for me to buy it. On the rare occasion I do commission a pipe, I leave most of the details to the carver; though sometimes it's hard to remind myself I am commissioning a pipe from a carver for the reason that I like their work, not because I want them to replicate an idea.

My pipes select me. I have more than a dozen American pipes, more than a half dozen Danish pipes, pipes from more than 6 countries and last year tried more than 40 different tobaccos!
I have more 50 pipes from more than 10 different makers of pipes but half are Stanwells, Savinellis, Neerups and Briarwoks.
Call my collection eclectic.

Great thread, and great story, Steve.
Not a huge amount of direction to my pipes yet, but I want to have a pipe bought in each major city where there is or was a major pipe manufacturer. So, my last trip acquired a lovely Parker in London, another in Edinburgh, and a couple of Petes in Dublin. Paris was a disappointment in what I saw, so I got nothing there.
