I imagine the definition of bad varies considerably amoung pipe smokers. I have had less than ideal smokes on occasion, and they are usually due to a pipe that has gone sour, or the heat and humidity takes it toll. It really is tough to have a good smoke with a pipe when the temp and humidity is both in the 90s. Probably better off with a cigar in this situation, but I'm stubborn and will smoke a steamy, tongue-biting mess to ash. To do otherwise, it unthinkable.

I feel sorry for those that give up on bowls and dump them. Where is their grit? 😉

I applaud your tenacity and stoicism 👏👏

But I’m a wimp
Best to dump a bad/unenjoyable bowl and start off with a different pipe and blend
Life’s too short to be a masochist 😁

I usually already know if I don't feel like smoking, and will not light a pipe.

If I am distracted enough to light a pipe, even though I do not feel like one, then I usually realise within the first quarter of the bowl. The way I realise I need to put the pipe down is my cadence is still too fast, because I am frustrated beyond what the pipe can provide in the way of calm.

In other words, its not usually the pipes fault.

I was thinking that I didn’t like Telegraph Hill as much as I used to when I realized that some life form had colonized my stem. I cleaned the stem out and the blend’s heavenly qualities were restored.

I think I know the cause - the pipe in question has a large draught hole and the pipe cleaner was too small for it. I picked up some tapered pipe cleaners.

My palate is currently wrecked, I got torpedoed by a kidney infection Sunday and started a course of antibiotics today.

I didn't want to smoke anything. My favourites taste pretty average at best now, so I've turned to blends I struggle with, to finish open tins and leave those behind. Every cloud, eh?

BB, I certainly hope you have a speedy recovery from the infection. That is no fun whatsoever but glad you are on the mend.
