Does Anybody Stash Pipes for Safe Keeping?

The thought has crossed my mind to stash pipes locally with a friend or out-of-state with family. This would be in case of natural disaster or burglary. I haven't done this because I don't have a second tier of pipes; as many as there are, I smoke them all in rotation and enjoy the inexpensive ones right along with the higher end pipes. I can't think of any I would contentedly do without, so that stymies my plan for a stash. Still, if I lost most of my pipes, it would be good to have an array of briars in the wings to resume smoking, without going with a handful of cobs from the local pipe shop for months. Anyone else have a trove of pipes in case of loss?

Yep, this should be first priority for the bunker. You never know how long a siege is going to last, so stock up tobacco also. ::
edit: some might suggest that ammo would be first priority, but in my point of view if you don't have tobacco to live for, what's the point?

I think that if a big catastrophe strikes I would have much more serious troubles to think about. Not that I have any kind of big collection, I 'm just imagining the impact if I had one.
Still, launching them in orbit would be cool! :mrgreen:

Great idea to have an offsite cashe for pipes & even some tobacco.
Also in the bunker for the siege:

ATF-Tp: Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms (including ammo), & Toilet paper.

Water & food would be nice as well.
We have a high-end safe for firearms, but all of the other space in it is for the wife's business financial documents & some family momentos. No room for pipes, let alone tobacco, even the scarce varieties (Penzance, Stonehaven, Tambolaka, Compton's, & some older tins).

The problem with the idea is that the catastrophe could happen where you placed the stash. You probably should consider having 10 to 20 different sites for stashing pipes. Maybe that seed vault in Iceland would be a good choice.

...and what if it's a disaster is large enough to take out the whole... wait... we should all just plan to guard McClellands and C&D headquarters. it's detrimental that we keep production going.

...I wasn't thinking end of the world, just a household disaster, but it's interesting to hear this extended to dystopia. I'm thinking more, being alive and well, in a somewhat stable situation but without pipes. Maybe I need to ship a few, or hand over a few, to two different people. That sort of thing. But you sure miss your favorites that get lost or busted.

I have insurance on my pipe collection, which isn't very many pipes; but to replace would be expensive. This covers me in the event of something major. It's about $6 a month extra on my personal belongings policy. If my pipe collection gets stolen, destroyed by a fire, tornado, etc... My insurance covers it, but it's for the collection itself and not individual pipes. I just periodically increase the coverage as I add pipes. I recently bought the most expensive pipe I have ever purchased and plan to list it separately on my policy, so that if I need to replace it I can. I have a number of items listed separately; guitar, drums, paperweights, coins, jewelry, etc; why not pipes. I went through a house fire in 2007 and then was burglarized in 2008 and learned that personal property insurance through a renters policy is something you want. All I have to do is take a picture of the said new pipe, email it to my insurance company and pay another $1 a month to have the new more expensive pipe covered if it's lost, stolen, or destroyed. It has to make sense for individual items though, as it doesn't make sense with most my pipes at a $250 deductible. Insurance is the way to go when protecting your valuables. I'll leave the stashing to the squirrels.

I was thinking about Fields when I wrote my response. He was afraid of being without funds on the Vaudeville circuit so he opened up dozens of small savings accounts in dozens of towns, most under fictitious names so nobody but he could trace them.

Evidently there were still a number of them left at the time he passed away, and only a fraction of them could be found.

I never thought about having a stash of pipes. If they were stolen or lost I'd do what I always wanted to do and smoke only cobs and many a few Dr. Grabows.

A few years ago or so, on this forum a member was talking about their house getting broken into and the bastards took all his pipes as well as the usual items. Ever since reading that I got paranoid. I keep seven out on my rack and the rest I put in the boxes in by gun safe. Since it took four big guys to get this thing in the house I feel fairly safe. Then every so often I take the seven off the rack but them back out and big seven others out.

It really is horrible, cause I had just made a stunning 20 pipe rack that does not get used now.

mso, while I never thought of it I do see your point. I have insurance on my pipes, but I would be on corncobs for a while before that kicked in and replacement pipes could be purchased. After thinking about your idea, in the end I would not do it. The person I sent the pipes to would probably lose them lol. Plus I would miss my pipes. The fireproof safe idea has merit though. I get to keep my pipes with me and their protected from thieves and fire. I have a safe for firearms why not a smaller one for pipes. One fireproof safe is about the cost of a expensive pipe, 300 to 400 dollars. Otherwise if your concerned perhaps a PVC pipe with a few pipes and tobacco sealed buried would meet your needs. Works for firearms, would work for pipes also. As usual you come up with thought provoking threads mso!

Such a lose would be covered under my insurance. I'd just buy new pipes (Reason to go to Dublin and London for a week or two). I'm not wedded to any of them so much that I'd loose sleep over any loses, excepting the one my wife gave me. Until I get a pipe or two I'd increase my cigarette and cigar smoking I suppose.
