I thought I had heard that it does burn hotter if it's dryer... or was it the other way around? Obviously, I'm a bit confused, although it does seem to make sense that dryer would be hotter. Anyway, I let an aro dry out a bit before smoking, and I did notice my pipe is quite a bit warmer. Is it dryer the hotter? And... Wetter the more tongue bite? I feel like a doofus asking this question lol. :?

Ya mate, I dry my baccy out till it is almost crispy, just my choice. Drier the baccy, the faster it burns, hence it can run hot if you let it. Wetter the baccy, the more steam, hence can give you some bite if your not aware.

Almost crispy? Thats good to hear one can get away with it being that dry, I know now that I don't let my tobacco dry out enough, which must contribute to me relighting 10 times a bowl on average still.

For me it depends on the blend. Some benefit from a little more moisture than others.
I have not found a tobacco yet that suited me at an almost crispy texture.
It definitely accelerates the smoke - it'll burn like wildfire if you let it.
All the same, steam burn is an even worse problem so you don't want your tobacco to be too moist either!
I have been served by maintaining the original moisture level of the tin as much as I can (usually by jarring ASAP) followed by a waiting period before every smoke where I allow the tobacco to dry to the desired moisture level.
Like most things, I find there is a happy medium there somewhere and it varies with the tobacco at hand.

I think it's important to note that most of us don't like our tobacco as dry as nsfisher
That is true for sure mate. If ya'll remember 8 Months to a Year or so ago, I was having horrible trouble with Bite/Burn and had been affected with this curse for all of the 18yrs that I been on the pipe. Since I have been drying my tobacco out to this texture, no more Bite/Burn. For me, it is a small price to pay. Usually, I can get 30-45 minutes out of smoke.

i like my tobac on the dry side as well. it allows me to smoke a bowl all the way to the heel, which is the hardest part to break in. these guys are right, some tobacs take more time then others to dry out. you will have to experiment to find what works best for you. good luck.

I also prefer my tobacco on the dry side, same reason as nsfisher, helps cut down on tongue bite. I have found that it is really hard for me to dry it here, due to high humidity. So I put some in a glass ashtray and sit it on a coffee cup warmer for a few minutes, and it works wonders.
You will have to try and see what works best for you. Like others have said, the journey is part of the fun.

I did learn about the pinch test myself and used it and it seemed to fall without clumping, but I still relit a bunch of times. Could have something to do with this new tobacco too I suppose, doesn't have a thick smoke either. Although maybe I really didn't pinch it very tight, not giving it a chance to stick together, I sort of just 'picked up' a pinch amount. Trial and error . . . I'll try again today.

Agree! I've been smoking for about 2 weeks now. And i have come to find that the dryer the tobacco the better. I made the mistake of getting an aromatic without letting it dry......let me tell you the tongue bite I received was like oh mama what I do....after almost burning off my tongue I started trying to allow my tobacco to dry first. Like everyoneelse says it all depends on the tobacco, some may take longer than others. My choice is for it to be as dry as possible and usually the bowl still lasts about 45 min to an hour.
Good Puffing. You will receive great advise from the users in the forum.

thanks a bunch all. I never tried to the pinch test, but I will now. I want a more happy medium. I don't want the baccy to dry so much that a smoke doesn't last the 45 minutes to an hour I've grown used to. And I don't want to burn the devil out of my pipe either. ;)
