Yes, I live in the Palm Springs area. No, that is not what I am talking about, LOL. I'm talking about smoking pipes with tobacco - get your mind out of the gutter.

Over the years, I've developed a bit of a nasty habit - if a tad too much saliva builds up while smoking, I find myself spitting on to the ground, especially if I am out lunting or sitting at my bar ( there is a open part of the yard by my bar stool.

Not always, but enough that I've become aware of it.

What about you - and keep your visits to San Francisco for another thread...Especially if you happen to have been in the Ozarks up by Bug Tussel. Those ruminations could go on forever.

Been smoking pipes and cigars for 20+ years and spit a lot. Now, I think if you're with friends smoking, maybe a bit more couth should be involved. However, in general, you be you brother.

There's not many blends that make me produce an excess of saliva, but for the ones that do I spit if I'm outdoors or just suck it up and swallow it if I'm inside.

It is one ya don't hear talked about too much, but it seems like whenever I smoke wetter aromatics my mouth just starts pouring saliva. I usually smoke dark fired blends or straight Virginias so it's not something I have to deal with too often, but every time I smoke a wet aromatic it's like the fire department showed up and just opened the valve on a hydrant in my mouth!

Smoking a pipe does not make me salivate excessively so I don't feel the need to spit while smoking. I rarely spit when using smokeless tobacco for that matter.

Sounds trite, but not intended as such, if I've got something in my mouth I don't like, I spit it out, including tobacco smoke laden saliva, but I mastered the fine art of spitting at an early age. That doesn't mean I never swallow when smoking a pipe, and don't usually end up with a bunch of noticeable stuff to spit out, but do it when I need to.

I never feel the urge or need to spit while smoking.

I'm a pretty liberal dude when it comes to acceptance and tolerance.
Spitting while smoking a pipe though.. it makes me angry.
There's just something so callous and inconsiderate about it if in public..

We had a new guy showing up to club meets a couple years ago. He had a bad habit of spitting while smoking.
He'd do it right there on the wood deck floor, right at our feet.
It took every bit of tact I could muster to not verbally assault him.

He still comes around- has become a regular. I've noticed his spitting habit has mostly ceased.

Never been a spitter - unless caught by a sudden inrush of tar laden moisture, in which case stand well clear. That hasn't happened in a long while, though.

Yeah it's weird, sometimes it makes me salivate sometimes it dries me out. When the former i will spit, either in a sink or outside. The latter i will take a drink.
Technically speaking/the healthiest thing to do is spit. Or even rinse your mouth out and spit again. By swallowing you expose your stomach to extra tar etc. Which other than mouth cancer is the highest risk I've read with non-inhaled pipes and cigars.
But I'm a dumb@ss that enjoys alcohol with my pipe so when it comes to risk I'm the last one to preach about harm reduction

Now I am thinking about making an Old Fashioned with some Maple syrup added to it. Goes great with Pirate Kake.

The opposite happens with me, I tend to dry out and need a beverage while smoking. Happens with cigars and pipe tobacco, used to only think that happened with the green leaf

I don't clench, so I don't have a bunch of saliva build up while smoking. I don't think my saliva levels change at all, up or down, while smoking.

I do spit though if I happen to suck a piece of tobacco or dottle through.

better to swallow it. The biology is that if you spit you'll produce more saliva then if you just swallow it. If you're worried about swallow that stuff just realize you're dumping it into a bag of strong acid which you already put worse stuff in. And as far as the mind in the gutter that's between you and whoever is paying for dinner.
