When I was working (was laid off in December), I had a 50 mile commute each way. In Atlanta traffic, you almost NEED something to help calm the nerves, lol. I've enjoyed many bowls on the way to or from work. Early morning is the best time for me, but tends to be a faster ride than when I was going home.
I have a few really light and smaller pipes that I use for driving. A Savinelli Churchwarden (much shorter stem) and a Stanwell or two. I tend to go for bent stems but have a couple of good straights that work just as well clenching.

I have a 25 minute commute to work, but a 45 minute commute home (drop off a co-worker/pick up wife), I pack a big bowl of burley in my favourite cob to start the day off, and switch to something a little more aromatic for the riders on the way home...but basically, a smoking pipe is a fixture in my truck.

I'm in a car about 8-10 hours on a work day, so smoking my pipe is one thing that helps me keep ... well.. close to sane.
I have a short no name pipe that I use for work, it gets a bit hot at times, lots of air movement and I'm not the most sedate of puffers. Thinking of getting a corncob but not sure if the wind from the window, AC, etc. will make it burn out.
Anyone have experience with that?

Pappy: I'm an on the road smoker as well. My solutions have been to crack the driver's side window. If that does not work well I top the bowl with my always available wind screen. At other times I'll close the driver's side window and crack the passenger side window. If I'm driving my truck, I'll crack the rear slide bed window. There is always a solution to wind management in a vehicle. There were only three times I found smoking difficult. Those were in a convertible, on my Harley, and during a pursuit in my Crown Vic Police Interceptor.

Thanks for the tips mjtannen! So I guess smoking during a pursuit would make it a "hot" pursuit... yeah, I know... groan.

@pappy: A hot pursuit is only chasing a chick. The usual perp was just a day at the office. I always have a pipe along for a chick chase. If they don't like my pipe, the chase is called off. My advice to you and any other chasers out there is to follow radio code "silent" procedure. Never tell your dispatcher, your mother, or your wife when initiating a chick chase if you have any of those tracking your every move. A guy and his pipe have got to have some privacy now and then.

If I'm by myself, I almost always puff and drive. Long drives it's a must. makes it relaxing and takes away the boredom. Drive home from work. I already got the pipe loaded and waiting for me in the car. A nice reward for a hard days work in my book. :puffy:
