I make it easy on myself, and add some blending tobaccos to existing, commercially available mixtures. This strategy has been very successful, for me. I don't know enough about blending from scratch, nor do I know where to source all the specially processed tobacco components. Also, I don't have the extra money to waste on my failures.
I start with a commonly available mixture, e.g. Lane's RLP-6, or HGL (Captain Black) then add some Perique, Latakia, or some extra sweet Cavendish, sweet Virginias, some Burley, etc. I jot everything down in a journal together with any yes, or no, blending critiques, either for duplication, or my final rejection.
I have come up with a few personalized mixtures that I enjoy smoking that started out as commercial blends. I can mix any amount if purchased by the ounce.
Hope this helps.
