One way to measure the toxicity (and there is certainly that) of tobacco smoke is to see your dentist regularly. You can not do that with inhaling or doing that nose thing; the doctor just cannot see enough and X-rays of either a horribly insensitive or pick up pathology too late. The dentist has a clear view. This may seem like a fatalistic view of the issue of inhaling as not a good thing and, as others have pointed out, as not inevitably desirable. Keep the smoke in your mouth and enjoy!

I exhale through the nose pretty often, but the smoke getting there from the mouth, not my lungs. I think I sometimes swallow the smoke, though.

I half inhale sometimes. Meaning I inhale a little bit into the throat area (if that makes any sense). Do any of you do that as well? Sometimes smoke comes out of my nose too. But for the most part, I think the smoke mostly stays in the mouth. I also smoked cigarettes for many years and started pipe smoking after a couple years of not smoking tobacco at all.

I never inhale from the pipe but do exhale through the nose often, I find that I can better taste a blend that way. I was a cigarette smoker of 15 years and then switched to cigars. I remember the first time I inhaled cigar smoke, I coughed my head off and then puked. You do inhale a small amount of smoke when smoking a pipe or cigars just from being around it though.
