I clean after smoking, except when I don’t, then I don’t. My pipes are pretty utilitarian, a small collection of used and abused basket cases and one or two that cost me *almost* $100 and that I no longer take fishing with me because they’ve been dropped in the water too many times for comfort.

Well, maybe once and a while I’ll run a cleaner through before a smoke, but the thought of a pre-smoke polishing up just never crosses my mind.

Whichever pipe that I'm smoking gets cleaned at least twice while I'm smoking. I don't like any indication of moisture build up. Whenever I feel the retrohale is getting little harsh, I pull the stem out and run pipe cleaner through stem, mortise and the bottom of the chamber. Put everything back and check if ember is still going. Dump the ash at that point. After the smoke is done, disassemble the pipe again and clean. Leave the pipe out overnight and toss it on the pile for next time.
