I really wish a word other than "clenching" were used for this habit. It may cause some to bite down on the stem.

I hold the pipe gently in the right side of mouth, and put it on the left when I think of it.

This is good reasoning. Plus clenching is reserved for other, lower parts of my body.

Until I came on here I used to say "clamping". Not sure it's much better but it maybe sounds a bit less fraught.

It's a fair point though that you should bite the pipes gently. Quite apart form damaging the mouthpiece, habitual hard biting can loosen your teeth.
