Do You Cellar Unsmoked Pipes

Never heard of "cellaring pipes" for smoking down the road. However, I have some special, or old, pipes that I smoke very rarely.
If I buy a pipe, I smoke it. Some more than others. But I couldn't imagine buying a pipe and putting it away, especislly for the reason Embers pointed out. And who knows if I'll even get to smoke it a decade from now.

I currently have a meerschaum that's about 120 years old . Clay pipes don't really age at all. So have I stumbled upon some kind of collective madness?

No. I guess it can be fun in a way, but never been a pipe collector. More like a pipe smokers.

As I think about it, the collection of unsmoked pipes are all older brands from way back. I started out thinking I wouldn't smoke them now- after all they made it this far- but would later down the line. If not me, perhaps they will have greater worth later down the line.

For whatever reason, I imagine a time when I will want to smoke a new pipe and getting a new one will be a bit of a challenge.

I can't say I worry about that. Even if the U.S. was to ban tobacco, I doubt they'd ban pipes. And even if they did, Europe and the rest of the world aren't likely to follow suit. But even if everyone banned pipes, I can't see outliving a collection of a dozen or so briar pipes.

I'm still having trouble wrapping my head around the "unsmoked" part. If you are laying away extra pipes for a very worst case scenario down the road, wouldn't you want to test them first, to make sure they're all good smokers?

I have a few pipes that I haven't smoked. Hell, I find pipes still in mailing boxes that I totally forgot that I ordered. I may not ever smoke them, or I might... It doesn't bother me at all to have unsmoked pipes. but, I don't think I understand this idea of cellaring pipes.

I’ve managed to cellar firearms, Ammo, tobacco, Dinty Moor stew and whiskey.


Of course I have pipes, but none would be considered “cellared”.

I have one unsmoked mm emerald bent cob. It’s my favourite shape of theirs so I purchased a spare. So yes, technically I have cellared a pipe.

In the not too distant future, I will be disconnecting from the internet almost completely. It's my version of going off the grid. Additionally, I am working on acquiring a home further removed from the cities with the idea of downsizing my social and economic entanglements. Once I have successfully completed this goal, purchasing pipes or finding new pipes will be increasingly difficult.

There are many reasons why people prepare for a more challenging future where economic realities might be very different than today. Someone who stocks up on toilet paper or other supplies such as water filtration devices isn't seen as off beat as they once were. I don't see why unsmoked pipes is seen as so different when viewed from this filter and perspective. But yes, cellaring pipes is something that doesn't get discussed.

You heard it first from me. Out of 330,000,000 people, I may get to be the one who started that discussion, LOL.

Sure, all of this is your prerogative, but none of it really answers the question about leaving your spare pipes unsmoked. Is the ritual of breaking them in just an essential part of the experience that you want to save for the future?

I have a couple spare clay pipes. Not that I ever drop one. They just sort of grow legs and fling themselves off of the counter onto the hard floor. Not often. But they do, sometimes.

Sounds like you live your life in a very unimaginative manner. But I'm not surprised. I'm sure the rest of your life will not be easy. Me, I'm on easy street.

YES.

It is the experience of breaking in a new pipe that I want to preserve. In the future, that might be a bit of a challenge for me.
