I cellar more than I smoke. I probably only average 1 bowl per day, sometimes 2. I figure if for some reason I ever need to quit smoking, I will be able to turn a small profit if I decide to liquidate my cellar.

Take MacBaren as an example. Last fall I added a ton of HH Vintage Syrian, HH Acadian Perique, HH Latakia, HH Mature Virginia, Navy Flake, Dark Twist, and a sprinkling of other blends to my cellar while it was on sale. If I were to buy the same amount today I would literally spend close to $500 more less than a year later for the same amount.
This right here is part of the reason I cellar. I also like to think I will be rewarded in a few years with blends that have had some time to sleep and upon awakening will provide me with a better smoke than if I fired up today.

I was thinking about this further, and came up with a metaphor. I like a house stuffed with good things: food, books, music, wine or analogue, and... tobacco. It's part of what makes life comfortable. I will never be like some of the folks here, who are meticulously organized and have a plan, but I always want to have an excess of tobacco around to enjoy like these other great things in life.

Been thinking about this thread lately.
I realized that while I'm sixteen months into the hobby, I've never actually finished a tin or bulk baggie. I'm up to twelve mason jars open (some nearly empty now), so I'm not going to open anything new until I've gone through a few of these.
I'm not worried about running out--this is at least two years worth of smoking for me.

I think whenever someone takes up piping, cellaring is not something they will do right away. Maybe after a few years when you have discovered a few favorites. Then that is when the cellar bug bites. I have three one year old frog mortons, 4 OGS, 3 Escudo, 2 Balkan Sobraine. My next order will be halved with the intentions of cellaring. Like most people I like rotation and always having the favorites on hand. So I'm under the both category.

Now that I've gotten into Escudo, Orlik Golden Sliced, Stokkebye's Luxury Bullseye Flake and Luxury Navy Flake I'm starting to get into cellaring. I usually buy 2 tins of Escudo and OGS with every order. One to have now and one to age. I also ordered up a pound of Stokkebye's LBF when SmokingPipes had their bulk sale on it last month.

I don't smoke very often buy buy or trade frequently. I only have about 8lbs sealed but at the rate I smoke will probably last 20 years. One or two group 5 bowls a month right now. I would like to smoke more, but just don't. Between weather and disabilities, it is a big deal for me to go outside and set up chair and table. Just don't get around to smoking as much as I would like.

I buy tobacco that I want to try, and repeat buy blends I really like so I have some on hand when I run out of the current tin. It just stacks up, so the cellar wasn't intentional but with multiple purchases it doesn't take long for tins to add up. It's only a cellar in the idea that I just haven't got around to opening those tins yet.

About 10 years ago I saw that tobacco prices were on the rise. At that time I had some extra income, so I bought as much tobacco as I could and stored it for the future. Except for some small purchases I have not had to purchase any tobacco for several years and I should have enough tobacco for several more years (that is if the house does not burn down). My sweet wife was concerned that I was spending so much money on tobacco 10 years ago, but now she sees that it was an investment. Today, if I had to purchase my daily tobacco at retail prices, I would have to either cut way back on my pipe smoking or give up eating for a couple days a week. 10 years ago I said that tobacco will never again be as inexpensive as it is today. That saying holds true today. In the past I given away a lot of tobacco, but now I am a bit more selective about giving away the tobacco that must see me through my retirement years. One nice thing about having a cellar such as mine is that I do not have to smoke any tobacco that has less than 10 years age on it, and that is a wonderful thing.

I enjoy cellaring, it's become a fun part of the hobby for me. Trying all the different blends is part of the hobby for me too. When I find something i like, I throw a good amount in the cellar.
It's a walk-in closet really but it's an awesome closet. I call it my spirit closet. It's fun to decorate with some Native American regalia, tobacco and pipes. I can just stand in it and admire all the fantastic tobacco. And like others have said, tobacco isn't gonna get any cheaper.
Besides, I might be able to barter with it for ammunition once the impending zombie apocalypse begins lol. :p

I have a pretty modest cellar in relation to many here. Maybe 3 dozen open jars and 20-30 tins for aging. I don't reach for each of those jars on a regular basis but all do get smoked, that's the point right?
What helped me get a foot up was participating in a tobacco lottery on a different board and having some luck. I try to order 2 like tins when buying something I know is good. I'm not loaded, have 2 kiddos and a mortgage so sometimes I'm in a position to put in an order and sometimes I'm not. I think having a cellar is more of a personal insurance policy than fear of regulation and price.

I tend to gravitate towards aged blends so cellaring makes sense. I also try to buy slightly more than I smoke each year so that I have a rotation where everything is 2 years or older. That being said, I try not to go too crazy. I try to keep it at least to what I can feasibly smoke in my life time.

I smoke every day and cellar when I can. Just took advantage of the Hearth and Home sale at pipes and cigars and the next day my son lost his job so he, his fiance, and my granddaughter are moving in with us until he gets back on his feet. So it's good I have some cellared because my tobacco buying funds will be short for awhile.

Right now, smoke.
If I had easy access to bulk baccys, I'd be alternating monthly purchases of pounds of FVF, DBE, and BCF for long term storage. As it is, purchases are limited to sometimes tobacco valued at less than shipping costs in order to keep amounts small enough to fly under the customs radar.
Luckily, before I left Ontario to move back to Newfoundland in 2008, a few business trips afforded me the opportunity for 4 X 1/2 lbs of bulk blends,Mohicans are smoking really Nice right now, and quite a few tins, some of which are still unopened.
To be honest, many of my Cuba vacations used to be planned around, and include, cigar purchases. Now, for the short term, I can see trips to the US in the next couple of yours to restock somewhat.

"A man needs a full library, full larder, and a full cellar to live a comfortable life".
I'm definitely "cellaring" books, but it's great to have many reading options on a rainy day.
