Do You Buy New Dunhills?

TBH, I would buy a new White Spot if I saw one I liked. I'm just not the biggest fan of traditional shapes, except the bulldog. And, white Spot Bullies seem to sell faster than I can make up my mind. I did get an older Dunhill bulldog that I just love. I wouldn't mind another. But no, I have not bought one yet. I tend to go for the more Danish style pipe designs.

I bought a new White Spot Cumberland Canadian .. the thing sucked. Finish on the rim wasn’t very good and the stem was junk. The dot fell out of the stem and the airway in the stem had a big open area inside. I replaced the dot and traded it back in to smokingpipes for store credit.

If you bought it from an authorized dealer anywhere in the world, the White Spot 2 year guarantee is worded so that any other dealer would replace the pipe. If you are happy with store credit, great. Smoking Pipes has replaced a friend of mine’s Dunhill that was purchased from Al Pascia because the stem dot fell out. He had the Al Pascia paperwork, and there was no hassle at all.

Yeh yeh yeh... I had meant to write Alfred Dunhill. That was a mistake. But, that doesn't make what I was saying false. At the same time "Dunhill" dropped just calling the pipes "Dunhills", they dropped the name from all other things pipe related, especially the tobaccos. They did keep the cigarettes, for now. But, this was a branding decision made by a company that decided to go 100% into fashion merchandising.

“They“ does not include Dunhill Tobacco. The Tobacco rights were spun out many years ago. The name change for the tobacco lines was a totally different and independent decision made by a completely separate conglomerate at a different time. To this very day, the “fashion line” parent owns Dunhill pipes and it is a division of the fashion company. This is not a hidden fact, it has bren pointed out time and time again on this and different forums, which confirms my belief that people are too busy posting to read past the first line.

They were all purchased from UK vendors at much better prices than they are sold for in the U.S. I have my eye on two more but unfortunately the UK vendors aren't shipping to the U.S. and Canada.

There are still U.K. shops that will send Dunhills internationallY, though James Barber won’t because they apparently lost their liability coverage for shipments of pipes to the US. They had the largest selection.

Al Pascia has a great selection, but the prices aren’t as good as in the U.K. The other Italian retailers usually have comparably priced Dunhills, but not as many to chose from.

I am, btw, extremely pleased with the new County I bought from Al Pascia around Christmas of 2019. If Al Pascia has any crappy pioes, they know me well enough not to send them. But I always ask about drilling, stem gaps, other deal breaker points before I order anything from overseas.

But, I have never seen anyone from Dunhill comment one way or another. So, I haven't seen those. Just seen some people who are guessing as much as the rest of us. I did read where press releases where Dunhill wanted it's name specifically off of the pipe tobaccos, and it was at the same time they dropped their name off of the pipes and dropped the White Spot Guarantee... So it is easier to connect those dots to wanting their brand off of pipe stuff.

My answer would be no, but I also prefer older Castello’s, Ashton’s, and Charatan’s, etc. I prefer 1960 or older Dunhill’s and 1980 or older on just about everything else with the exception of the modern day carvers.

I still buy new Dunhills. You're not going to get many responses that answer the question in the affirmative for the same reason you qualified the responses you were looking for, though. This forum, like everything, is great in some areas, but some areas, as they say, take what you like and leave the rest behind. Talking about Dunhill here is pointless but I commend your effort ;-)

The first one i purchased was new, a 2008 6103 Ruby Bark. It failed the pipe cleaner test so I traded it to a friend for two tins of Mephisto.

I have old and I have bought some new(er). I had hoped the new would smoke as well as the old. Of the 4 or so newer ( 2011+) none have smoked anywhere as good as the old. I’m no pipe maker so I can’t tell you why but for me, they just don’t reach the mark of the older pipes. The draw is not as good, the pipes smoker hotter and they are not as sweet. Your mileage may vary.

There are no new "Dunhills." The Dunhill brand no longer wants to be associated with smoking any more, so they are all referred to as "Alfred's White Spots."

It’s my understanding that these are still a Dunhill product, that the Dunhill Branch simply changed the name, and maybe even the Branch within the company has changed.

Because these are still made at the Dunhill Factory, and the name is simply now;

Alfred
The White Spot
Dunhill’s

So by name, they aren’t just stamped Dunhill on the bottom, I believe all this means is to just have a Dunhill pipe that use to be associated under one name, that has now changed to another, for the sake of Tobacco Health Concerns. I’m not implying anything to do with a change in pipe practices/standards/carving...

It’s my understanding that Dunhill, given the world stance on the health relationship of tobacco, no longer wanted it associated to the fashion name side of Dunhill, as on www.dunhill.com therefore separated the pipes from this division of Dunhill.

If anyone can shed further light, please do...

Yes, I bought an NOS Dunhill some years ago because I liked how it looked.
Haven't figured out when it was made though, but stamps and nomenclature looks different from Dunhills from current production.

No, I haven't.
But I have 2 new Dunhills, both from the '70s, gifted by 2 generous friends. One was a graduation present. The other (unsmoked, in the original box and state) was a recent "welcome back to the pipe smoking community" present, from a collection left to him by his father.

Came very close last week to buying the very small Cumberland billiard. I like short pipes with standard bowls. While I kept coming pack to look at the pipe the size (about 3.5 inches) was off putting to me. I was also concerned about sten comfort. In the end it didn't make a difference as someone else grabbed it. I have but two Dunhills presently (although I have had and traded others). One is a bent Cumberland Army Mount with silver which my wife gave for my 60th birthday and a shell Lovat. Neither gets smoked very often but each is handsome.
