Update on my answer: I tried my first cob today. An MM Easton. And, yes, you NEED a cob.

The Eaton is a very nice small pipe.

I like mine for a quick smoke and the bowl size is perfect for folding flakes.

+1 crashthegrey, I like those cheap pipes in a box you have to search through at your B&M for $30.00 ?? way better & last longer than a cob. Sorry Cob Guys & Gals.

Short answer yes, long answer no. I have one cob and after the "break in" period it's a great smoker and it's probably the only pipe I can smoke back to back bowls in, and that's including my meers. So no technically you don't "need" a cob, but all in all it's the one pipe I'll bring when I'm camping, or if you're worried about breaking a pipe, losing it, etc.. They do make some blends shine.

I love my cobs. Not because I am from Missouri either. I like them for all the reasons put out before me here; light, open draw, durable, economical (NOT CHEAP). But mostly I like cobs when trying new tobacco. The cobs once broken in don't hold a corn flavor very much, and they do not ghost very much either. I feel it gives me a better idea of the true flavor of the tobacco. AND I love trying new tobacco, that's why I miss the box pass.
