Tiltle re-worded slightly. If I am off base, Mike, PM me. -jpm

The money that I spend of my hobbies is fixed and separate from other accounts. Imagine an envelope I fill from time to time with spare money. If I don't have spare money, I don't fill the envelope. If I don't fill the envelope, I don't spend anything.

But do any of you guys need to dial back pipe purchases in lean times? Or do you just buy what you like when you see something you like?

My wife and I buy what we want when we want since becoming empty nesters. As for big purchases....cars, camper, furniture etc., we discuss and decide together.

If and when I sell a pipe on the forum, that money goes towards a new pipe.

I spend what I can justify at the CFO. Sometimes it's more, sometimes it's nothing. I switched positions a few weeks ago and I'm not able to make paid overtime, so it will be less than I could when I did.

Absolutely. I'm on a budget whether times are good or bad. One thing about being a professional artist is that you learn to save and invest in good times to be able to weather the bad times.
At this point in time I'm set when it come to both pipes and tobaccos. There are things I may want, but there's nothing I need.
I want to make sure that people I care about are provided for when I fall off the twig.

I had to look up "fall off the twig," as I don't think I'd heard the phrase before. It was cool to read about. Thanks!

I haven't bought a pipe in quite some time because I haven't come across one recently that struck a chord. I'm still buying tobacco when brands I like come in stock. The recent economic downturn has a secondary role in spending decisions.

With mediocre income, loans and 4 kids, I'm on a budget. But that goes for any purchases, not only pipe related. I try to make my purchases count and not buy unnecessary stuff that'll only end up as clutter. So far I've managed to buy what I need and a little extra.

I want to add that my wife and I don't run around spending money on a bunch of stuff we don't need. It was many years while we were raising a family that we went without so the kids had what they needed. All three of our kids are grown, have their own homes and we have a lot more time and money for ourselves. I'm retired receiving a pension and I work part-time at a bank, my wife still works four days a week (close to retirement) and we do have a healthy savings.

Though I no longer buy pipes (but have ~200 in several boxes) I do like to indulge in my hobbies of book collecting, antique pocket watch collecting & higher end wristwatch collecting and to a lesser extent, mineral collecting.

Living alone as I do, my outgoings are at a minimum so I find it no great hardship to splurge once in a while when I spot something that tickles my fancy.

That said, as I plan on moving house later in the year I really should be putting monies aside for those incidentals associated with such a plan as I want to spend as much of my Mother's legacy on the actual house itself.

Regards,

Jay.

No, but I'm close to being an empty nester and not really looking at pipes anyway. I certainly did a few double takes at the grocery store yesterday. Yikes! It's been awhile since went shopping. I feel bad for families with young kids to feed.

Budget is always the driving force. But at 60+ pipes I no longer have a desire to buy another one. Not to say I never will again but it would take seeing one that really strikes my fancy to get me interested and (fortunately) there is no such pipe currently on the market.

I've tried to keep my spending moderate, and my smoking certainly is, so money is not a primary concern relating to my pipe smoking. One strategy is to trade in several pipes for store credit to get one pipe I want. That decreases the total number of pipes while satisfying my PAD. I only buy two or three tins, baggies, or pouches of tobacco at a time, and it still accumulates. I think I could coast for six or eight years without running out. I've won two excellent pipes in Forums contests, and those are definite keepers, so that also helps, along with two other pipes from Forums members not involving a contest, and a number of gift pipes from my wife, friends, and family.
