Still a beginner. I'm getting a feel for packing technique with the two blends that I have tried thus far. However, I'm noting the immense variety in the way tobacco can be cut, and I'm wondering if there are trends or relationship between the cut and how a tobacco packs into a bowl. Currently, I only have first hand experience with bulk tobacco, no flakes or cakes or anything. Just wondering if anyone has noticed cut to be a factor.
Is there any general wisdom on this that I should know about?

Ahh, I hadn't thought about burn time. If a fine cut burns faster, would that also generally equate to a hotter burn?

Here are some methods I like to use and the different cuts I like to use them with.
For Flakes and coins, I like the Fold and Stuff Method.

For Rough-cut/Cavendish Cut/Mixed cuts I like the 3- Step Method.

For ribbons, I like to use the Harry Method.

Yes, the cut size is a factor in packing and smoking. I prefer a slightly larger cut than the typical commercial cavendish style blends. C&D (www.cornellanddiehl.com) does use a larger cut for their blends and I find it much cooler smoking. You pack the same, meaning that you test the pressure (sponge effect). You get the hang of it as you experiment with it. Not difficult at all. Just different and rewarding as far as I am concerned.

Yes ribbon cuts burn faster and hotter, it is the reason I don't smoke them. I smoke only flakes because they burn cooler and I love the flavors of flakes. I get much more flavor out of them than I ever did out of a ribbon cut. But that is just me, your mileage may vary.
