A good place to start is to do it the old school way, smoke one pipe a day, all day ( probided you wait about an hour after each smoke) and then let it rest 7 days, this means you have one pipe per every day of the week.
This will keep your pipes in very good working condition, it is not the do all end all, you can have more or less than 7 (around here its more often 'more')
My pipe mentor always tells me to build a collection of 30 pipes i regularly smoke, one for each day of the month, while this may seem like alot, it probably is a good goal, the key is pipes you regularly smoke, its common to have pipes you never pick up

I have one kirsten, it's from the 1940's in real good shape and it's still on the job and smokes good. This pipe was made befor they started putting o-rings in them so I never need to buy them.

If you don't mind long stems, Churchwarden pipes are well known for very cool and pleasant smokes. My favourite kind of pipe. I have 3 Peterson's churchwardens and 4 Savinelli churchwardens. I have about 14 pipes for rotation. If you're looking to expand your collection, do try Peterson pipes. I found that their inexpensive pipes such as the Peterson Aran pipes smoke really well.

My MM Corn Cob Freehand provides the coolest smoke I have ever enjoyed. Next up would be one of my meerschaum pipes.
