Do any pipe types/brands smoke cooler than others?

With all the types and brands of pipes on the market, do some smoke cooler than others? I am looking to add to my pipes and thought I would ask for assistance. I only have 2 pipes and really only like one. So, I need more--any suggestions including the number of pipes to rotate through would be welcome.

Cool smoke or cool to the touch?

Generally, I feel that Missouri Meerschaum corncobs without filters smoke the coolest. But any pipe filled with drier tobacco smoked slowly will be cooler than a pipe with moister tobacco puffed too quickly.

All other things being equal, my Meer smokes the coolest.

I have a Peterson churchwarden that has a cool smoke, but, because the walls are thin, can get quite hot in the hand.

The multipass models such as the Kristin and the Quiet Comrade are known to be cool smokers as the smoke has to make a long passage before it gets to you.

I have 6 Falcon pipes that are the coolest smoking pipes that I have.

With the exception of that abonination called Brylon, most any pipe pipe will smoke cool if smoked correctly. Some pipes can be a bit more tempermental than others, and require and slower smoking cadence, but they can all smoke cool. As for coolest smoke without a learning curve I would have to go with a gourd Calabash.

I have never heard of a multipass pipe model. How does it work? Are they expensive? Thanks!

I have heard that Meerschaums smoke cool. I do smoke slowly and draw in shot slow draws. I don't remember the brand of the pipe (bought it 10 years ago, but didn't start smoking again until recently). The pipe I like is a thick walled, very hard briar made in Italy. It doesn't start getting warm until about the last 1/3 of the bowl. So the more it burns down, the hotter the smoke gets even though I am drawing slowly.

I think hobie may have been referring to Kirsten Pipes.
I don't have one yet, but I have only heard good things about them.

Cobs smoke very cool, as tiltjlp mentioned. The biggest key to a cool smoke, however, as was mentioned, is smoking slowly - and having your 'baccy fairly dry.

Wow Guys,

Found out something interesting about the Kirsten pipe operation. Right now, they can only sell out of there local stores and had to shut down there internet site as far as selling pipes are concerned. I called the main store in Seattle Washington and found out something interesting.
I happened to get one of the owners of the Kirsten stores and pipe company. The major credit card clearing bank that was servicing their web site shut them off because they are selling tobacco products. Now, not just tobacco mind you, but pipes. I said, you got to be kidding me: he said nope, and further we have tried 5 other banks and they won't take us either. The owner also told me, that they will probably have to not send out products via postal mail because the post office doesn't want to ship tobacco products.
He said the factory is closed until January 10, and to call him back about the end of January. I can then send him a check and he could send me a pipe by way of Fed Ex or UPS.
This sure sounds strange to me, but I was talking to one of the owners. Can this be totally true? You can buy porn using a credit card but not a tobacco pipe? I am clueless on this one. Maybe some of you tobacco experts can explain this to me. I had credit card in hand ready to buy a pipe!

I believe there is a restriction on sending tobacco into Washington. So, this could all be part of that.

It is illegal in Washington state to ship tobacco (with the exception of large cigars) to anyone in Washington state who is not a licensed wholesaler or retailer. Shipping of pipes themselves is not illegal.
I wouldn't be at all surprised to hear that USPS is giving them grief...even if they are following the law.
As for the banks... sounds totally messed up, but again...it wouldn't surprise me in WA.
As for Kirsten pipes themselves: They are quality pipes and smoke cool and dry. I've had one for about 10 years. The aluminum body allows heat to transfer from the smoke and also causes moisture in the smoke to condense inside the body before being pulled thought the stem.

A Kirsten was next on my PAD list. Looks like I'll have to wait a while. Actually, I'll be going up to the Seattle area next June for the National Homebrewer's Conference and a side trip over to Kirsten sounds like it's in order!
Hmm, just looked at the Kirsten site and don't see anything about this, looks like you can still place an order.
Man, my home state has some dumb laws regarding tobacco. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm suddenly glad I live in California. I know, what are the odds?!!?

I'll stick my two cents in here:

I would have to say that some of the coolest smoking pipes I have are those produced by Claudio Cavicchi.

A little pricey but well worth every penny.

Even the 1 C grade have exquisite grain.

The 5 C Volcano is the "Bee's Knees".

How often do you rotate through your pipes? Also, what do you think the minium number of pipes should be for a nightly and weekend pipe smoker?
