Sablebrush hit it. This was a business decision based on the cost of production, not the government mandating that they shut down because they produce tobacco products.
However, the cost of labor is directly effected by government regulation, law and policy. Direct wages are just part of the equation. When you run a business in a welfare state, the entire population is your employee.

@junkyarddawg, I hope they don't discontinue Condor. That would be aggravating to say the least.

Well, I just mortgaged my house and bought 5 pouches. Never tried it so I'll see how it goes when I get it.

Speaking of mortgages 900 people have just lost their jobs, some of whom I know. Guess they will be more worried about how they are going to pay their mortgage.

Hmmm! Been slowly accumulating a stash of Condor plugs against this day (buy 2, smoke 1, stash1), but at the price they are, it's been a very slow process..........until today, that is. Bought 10 to add to the 3 I already had sitting at home ready to jar. Nice lady in the shop didn't bat an eye lash at my request, and when she handed 'em over smiled broadly and hoped that I enjoyed them (which was nice).
Walking down the road, holding my valuable stash, I nearly had heart failure as the realisation of what I had just done started to set in, and more importantly how much it cost me.
Well, given there's a year or 2 yet before, who knows what, I will just slowly accumulate more and jar them up. Aged Condor is exquisite, so when I'm good and old, this stuff should just be hitting its prime.
Well, it's a sad, but inevitable day. All things come to an end - we're not there yet, but, soon, maybe, the Mighty Condor will go the way of some of the past greats. But then, and only then will it become truly legendary and we can all bask in the knowledge that we smoked a legend.
If it does fade into history with the closing of the factory, I hope they leave it to rest in peace and do not attempt a resurrection - it just seems to diminish once great blends when pale imitations, and inferior renditions are created, ostensibly to cash in on the name, the fame, the myth, the legend, the modern smokers desire to see what the fuss was about.
Nuff said. I'm off to marvel at my little miracles ageing in jars, and calculate how many more I need to get to see me into the grave..........all things pass.

Well if this directive was about requiring modernized, safer equipment, will it apply to the Germain folks sitting out on the Isle of Jersey?

It wasn't about requiring modernized, safer equipment. It was about a packaging change. The proverbial straw, I assume.

Yes, it's a business decision but it was put into motion by government regulation, which is how government everywhere works when it's been unsuccessful using other more direct means. This is how carbon dioxide became a dangerous pollutant, not because it is, but because of the power it gives a minority to rule the majority.
Anyway, in a related story affecting the arts: State Opera cancels Carmen because ‘it promotes smoking’

Surprised Russ O hasn't whipped out an "Albatross" tribute blend.

Question...
Does anyone know what other tobaccos are also produced at this facility? Is this the same factory that also produces Warrior, Revor and Erinmore Plugs? Mick Mc Quaid?

@ clarkj, I wasn't aware they produced pipe tobaccos at all at this facility. To my my knowledge it is only cigarettes like Benson and Hedges and Silk Cut as well as RYO tobacco.
