In Seattle, we just had a case where a cop shot a man who was carrying a knife. The man was a native American wood carver who apparently did have mental health/substance issues. The evidence photos showed a folding knife large enough to be dangerous and the man did not comply with an order to drop it.

Turns out the knife was closed at the time, and the cop fired four seconds after giving the order.

It seems to me that guns are just too available and there are too many people eager to use them.
