Hi!

I am not new to smoking pipe, so this is not a beginner's mistake type of question on how to smoke a pipe. But I have a problem with one of my pipes. Actually, I have a semi-large collection of estate pipes and this is a problem that I have with more than one pipe. I will try to describe the problem.
When I smoke the pipe, I like a good mouthfull of smoke. This is what I expect from a good pipe, that it is easy to draw a mouthfull of smoke without having to puff extra hard to build up a good draw, nor stress the cadence to maintain a steady burn. Of course the pipe goes out once in a while and you have to relight, that is not an issue. But the problem I have with this pipe is that I only get like a half mouthfull of smoke when I draw. I can have a full burn in the pipe, with smoke raising from the bowl, but still it is hard to get a proper mouthfull of smoke. It is not satisfying, and to compensate one has to draw too much; it is not relaxing, the burn constantly have to be "entertained", the smoke will get too hot. In short, it is not enjoyable. The thing is that I have this problem with a Stanwell estate pipe that I expected to be of better quality (it cost me over 100$). And, I should add, that it is not a question of which tobacco I smoke, it is the pipe that behaves in this way.
So I don't know what to think of this. Would you say that this type of problem simply constitutes a bad pipe that does not smoke well, and that I should give up on it. Or would you say that some pipes are like this, perhaps more suitiable for sipping technique (contra big mouth full of smoke), or more dependent on the right packing technique etc?

I'm not sure I understand what "half a mouthful" means. Do you mean the smoke feels too thin and airy, or that the draft hole is so narrow that you can't pull enough smoke through it?

Have you checked that nothing is obstructing the draught hole and shank? For that matter, have you made sure there are no obstructions anywhere in the pipe? Could it be a Stanwell that has a very old filter in it? Could it be a Stanwell built for 9mm filters that has a clogged adapter?
I don't mean to insult. It is kind of like how tech help people ask if your computer is plugged in.
For what its worth, my Stanwells preform beautifully.

There is no problem with any obstructions in the shank or anything. So the problem is not that I can't get enought air-flow through the pipe, it is rather the opposite problem. So yes, by "half a mouthful" I had in mind that the smoke is too thin and airy.

It sounds like the airway is restricted in some way, and since this is an estate pipe, that could be caused by a variety of things. It may need a new stem, or the stem filed open, or the shank opened up. I have only Italian made Stanwells with wide-open draw, and I have heard the Danish pipes were wide open. You don't pack too tight. I'd tinker around with it, and if that doesn't turn up the problem, send it to a pro.

I don't think the airway is restricted or blocked in any way. But the pipe is constructed with a very narrow stem. I guess this is the problem. In every other aspect is a beautiful pipe, so I'm a bit surprised why it is constructed in this way.
