I m wondering what are the differences. I m in EU. Austria to be exact. Does US have more choices?
I look forward to Christmas. I would love to trade some tobaccos with an US citizen with regional tobacco. Although shipping will probably kill me young jedi :D

That's an awfully complex question. Might be simpler if you listed the genres that you prefer to smoke.

Good question. I noticed "FOR U.S. SALE ONLY" stamped on the back of my most recent tobacco tins, despite being a "product of Denmark". I suspect it has to do with how taxes and duties and compliance labels are factored though, rather than any exclusivity. I think the E.U. has requirements for graphic lung cancer surgeries to be printed on cigarette boxes, for example.

Well, you can't even compare the different EU Countries to each other, which have a very different regulation and availability of pipe tobacco. Austria is with a state distribution channel (Trafik) a really bad example of availability and variety of blends, whereas Germany has no restrictions and most shops offer a wide variety of pipe tobaccos. Comparing EU and the US, i would say that each area has specific blends, which are only available of the respective country.

My general impression (and I'd like to be corrected if I'm mistaken) is that it is generally easier to get tobacco through US customs than EU customs. I live in Spain and some years ago I periodically got orders from most major US vendors without problems. Now I only know two that still dare to defy the odds and help with a little creativity in their goods declaration (or is it "manifest"?).

On the bright side, some C&D blends are coming to Germany next month. And we have the classic European brands plus the (comparatively) new addition of HU.

What concerns me more is the possibility of a price spike like the ones seen in Australia or Canada. Political agendas left and right seem to be headed that way.

A major difference I've noticed is some reason EU products get a weird free pass on flavoring a significant amount of their tobacco but are still looked at as unflavored by smokers. A lot of blends people rave about have flavorings on them, then if they smoke actual unflavored tobacco from C&D or D&R get quite turned off.

I have no idea why this is. I enjoy aromatics but I've stopped buying anything not made in the US when I want something actually unflavored. Got tired of buying so many tins of different Virginias only to keep finding out they kept having some type of fruit or flower topping. If you aren't expecting this, you might be surprised. I was.

I get the feeling you’re asking about generalizations of flavor and production style as opposed to corporate structure and ease of acquisition, is that correct?

I'm no expert on the matter, but there's certainly lots of brands you can find in the USA but not Europe and vice versa. Not sure who has more, Swedes and Danes seem to dominate the industry on both sides of the Atlantic.
