Difference between briar???

I have seen a few ways to describe briar. Some of which are rock briar and root briar. I am not sure but I thought all briar was root? Any info for a newbie is appreciated.

Actually a good question! I think there is different types of briar like trees theres different typesof trees in the same family. maple sugar maple ect? Just a guess

I think root briar, rock briar etc. are just names for finishes (rustication, colour, etc.) by particular brands.

I actually thought it might be marketing because that is what I do for a living. I just wanted to find out for sure.

I second or uh third the marketing deal. I once owned a pipe that said Century Old Briar - welll...if it was that old - I certainly didn't notice any difference in the smoking experience. The pipe ended up getting chucked anyway as it smoke wayyy to hot for my enjoyment.
