All four of my fully bent, system, Petes smoke very well. No problem passing a cleaner, pull the bit and shove it through. Some smokers simply cannot figure out the system pipes, the construction seems to offend their senses. Thousands of system pipes, in the hands of smokers, seem to suggest the pipes smoke well for most people. Those of us who enjoy the Peterson systems can only sympathize with those who can't figure out how to smoke them.

Being able to pass a cleaner is a functional thing. I like to to run a cleaner through mid-smoke, if necessary. Especially a factor on humid days, which is most of the summer here.

I have a few pipes which get sufficiently moist mid-smoke, (ironically none are Petes), that I swab them out. In those cases, I just take out the stem, swab, and put it back without ill effects.

Ah, Peterson has had an allegedly long history of quality issues. Among them being dip stained and in line with this thread, the drilling if the pipe's airway not lining up with the stem. Some think that a badly drilled airway causes condensation and gurgle in a pipe and will not allow a pipe to pass a pipe cleaner.

Welcome to the forum BTW.

Thanks for the explanation. Nice to be here. My pleasure.

I have 7 Petes, 6 bent non-System and one straight System. All but one of the bents (mostly military mount/spigot John Bulls) will pass a cleaner without removing the stem. My Oom Paul will most definitely not. Did I just get really lucky?

Why? According to whom?

I know some people think it's a sine qua non of good pipes, but I've come to believe there's very little rhyme or reason to what makes a pipe smoke well. Passing a pipe cleaner is not a big deal to me one way or the other.

I've found that my pipes where the draft hole is drilled high in the mortise tend to gurgle and smoke wet. For the most part, I no longer own those pipes. It could just be that I tend to smoke too fast or sometimes don't dry my tobacco enough, so maybe it's in part operator error, but I don't have as much of a problem from pipes that can pass a cleaner easily.

The general reason given for this gurgle / "pass a cleaner" issue is that pipes that don't have a direct path from the bowl to the button (i.e. can't pass a cleaner) tend to cause turbulence in the smoke as you puff on the pipe, which encourages condensation. Same principle applies for example in wood stove chimneys - the elbows and bends cause turbulence and are where you see the most creosote buildup.

And that is pretty well the idea behind Peterson system pipes ,which some people cant seem to get their heads around

I think full bent pipes not taking a pipe cleaner is not often a drilling issue. (Though it may be boring, ha-ha.) Drilling relates to how centered the airway is all the way through, how it matches up with the stem, how open it is, given the airway size, and where the airway opening ends in the bowl. My particular Petes have been good on this score, and most are lower and mid- priced, no system pipes, only one P-lip.
