wow really lot of great advice, i know i have to adjust my senses to these powerful tastes and scents etc. knowing it will take time. good to know that its not always an immediate like or dislike. I mixed 50/50 LJ burly and LJ virginin and that was pretty good but had to be careful of the bite lingering in the background. I'm gonna take the latakia's slow an easy for a couple weeks and give er a go. thanks for all the info, it helps and is appreciated!

I had never tried any Latakia (even a blend with latakia) until just two weeks ago.
I bought a ounce of jar tobacco from my local shop that was just marked 'Latakia'
It's different, and not my favorite to have all by itself, but it was still an interesting taste experience. It taught me how different one type of tobacco is from another.
I'm probably going to do the same with the other major strains of tobacco so I get a good idea of the base ingredients for all the blends out there.

It is amazing how tastes can change/develop. I recently ordered a bag of Stonehaven. Now, the main reason I got it was that I was also ordering Penzance at the same time. I love Penzance, but was indifferent to Stonehaven the one and only time I tried it. However, it was available and I figured I could always trade it with someone else. I jarred it up the other day, but set aside a flake to sample...turns out I LOVE Stonehaven!!!!

First, don't beat yourself up. There is nothing wrong with store bought blends. Pipe smoking and the various blends is all personal taste and this hobby should be stress free. If you want to try different blends experiment with viginia based, latakia based and oriental based blends. Although most lakakia blends will also contain various amount of orientals and virginias. Finally, a great entry blend for latakia is McClelland's Blue Mountain since it is a light latakia blend with some additional tobacco that gives it a very nice room note.
Good luck and try not to sweat this blend thing since it should be enjoyable!
