Jim:
I'm so sorry to hear about your dental problems and I think you're wise soliciting comments and a second opinion.
If you decide to go through with the procedure I'm with everybody else: your pipes will be waiting and your tobacco will continue to age nicely.
That said, I'm sure this an expensive procedure and dental insurance will only go so far. If you need funds, I'd like to be the first mutt in line to buy one of your Charatan After Hour burners. You've got a beautiful collection - Forgive me, God, but I covet those pipes - and shelling out some gittes for one is the least I can do to keep you chewing meat.
Do we have a deal? Yes? No?
Never mind....
Get well, Double Tee.

LoL... Tanks for the offer... Jim... I am sure there isn't much in my collection worth selling.

I am fortunate to have dental insurance that will pay a bit of my costs... And like my teeth I have few usable pipes to return to after this is all done!
I am thinking of buying a few pipe blanks to carve to keep my mind on pipes while I try and keep my mind from smoking.

Really sorry to hear about this, and I hope that you make the right decision for you.
Ya know, when you think that you have 'problems' and then listen to others, maybe yours arent' so bad.
Good luck

Thanks Allan,

I can only say I have a sister fighting cancer and my struggle is very very minor.

I have always believed like you, that everything can be worse. What I am going through is very minor.

I'm resurrecting this thread as I am about to undergo an implant process for two front teeth. I have no qualms about halting the pipe for recovery purposes and can endure since I've always been more about my modest collection than full-on smoking.
However - I'd be interested in knowing if anyone has had issues with implants post recovery with pipes?

My older brother had some implants done. The teeth look great, but apparently there was some weirdness with the cadaver bone they used for the graft, so now he's a homicidal maniac, locked in the bughouse. Other than that, no problems.

Whew. That's a relief, I thought I'd end up with an alligator or beaver donor graft, and wind up indescriminantly chomping on stuff. I'm sure I wouldn't like half the stuff I would bite.

I'm not sure if ald' is joking. I hope. I can attest from my wife's experience that some routine procedures like a hip replacement can lead to a cascade of unanticipated problems. The medical people have the term "zebra" for people who have unusual and unique problems, like you expect a horse but you find a zebra. This has been years of revisions, antibiotics, and recovery.

Nah, I'm just kidding. It all went well. But I will admit that the thought of having cadaver bone implanted does creep me out!

MSO - Sorry to hear about any complications your wife faced, and I hope all is well now.
So if what I'm hearing is, after the implant process is completely finis, should be normal activity from there on out.
