I've always taken good care of my teeth so I was a little leary of how my checkup would go since I started smoking a pipe. i had also been pounding the coffee from the mortician gig. No worries. They said my teeth were beautiful except that I grind them too much (which they always say). I celebrated with a corncob full of Captain Black after lunch today.

Congratulations on your check up. I can't wait for my next dental visit. Had a horrible battle with gingivitis a while back. Cleared it up all on my own though with the help of some members here. Started a huge regiment of brushing, flossing, rinsing, and water picking three times a day for a week or so and then down to twice a day brushing/flossing with just a mouthwashing midday. A little over a month and a half later the redness is all gone, my gums don't bleed anymore, and I'm back to smoking two to three pipes a day with no flare ups.

I more or less quit pipe smoking for about 5 years. When I came back to it, I noticed I was now leaving a mysterious (small, shallow) tooth mark, more like a mar, in the top of the stems. This is even with the pipes I smoked before that I left no marks on. I have had some minor dental work during my hiatus, just a couple of crowns on back moloars.
I was surprised that even a little dental work can change your bite enough to leave marks that were not left before. My clench is the same as always.

I've only been smoking for about a year. I get in at least a bowl a week, though upwards of seven if I can. I went to the dentist yesterday, and he didn't even ask if I'd been smoking. Guess I'm keeping the pearly whites pretty damn pearly.

I had only been smoking about a month at my last dental visit and my dentist mentioned that I had chew marks on both cheeks. I've been doing a weekly check of things since I started smoking and notice the marks are still there. They are definitely related to chewing though, you can faintly discern the outline of the teeth as part of the mark. I can't really say if it's related to the pipe or just coincidence. I'm going to mention the smoking to the dentist and keep up regular self checks, but I'm a pretty light smoker, 3-5 bowls on the weekends only, and am not overly concerned.

I was concerned about this too, no problems thus far. I'm with you baronsamedi, I can pound out some coffee on an overnight shift, but no problems with that either. I defiantly think the benefits greatly outweigh the risk, but lord help, there's risk in everything we do. I say live life, enjoy, and have a little faith that deaths not lurking around every corner.

having no problems with teeth - they are good as when i was not smoking ... i think that i read somewhere that pipesmoking has few good things related teeth and mouth in general - killing bacterias or something - not really sure...

my problem is with bad breath after smoking... my wife does not like it so i clean my mouth every time after smoking and also clean my nose using salt water... that removes almost all the smoke smelling residue.. :)

I also rinse my mouth and brush after smoking. Maybe not right away, but when I get home for the night. My wife has never complained, but I don't care for stale smoke taste after awhile.

I'm no dentist but I think hygiene is more important than the negative habits. I got a tooth broken recently and had a dental visit for the first time in 20 years. The dentist remarked on how clean, healthy, nice my teeth are. Said it was a shame one got broken. I brush twice a day, floss after each meal, and rinse often with baking soda or salt water when listerine isn't available. I will rinse with just water if its all I have.
