I haven't tried Gentleman Caller - yet. But I have tried 4 noggins Mojo and C&D Crooner - don't care for them - but I highly recommend Sterlings/1776 Freedom Blend which has a deertongue casing which is excellent. Also I like H&H Old Tartan which has a deertongue casing which is also tasty.
Steven Books - House of Calabash has a really nice blend called Mrs. Calabash which has deertongue in it and I think for a natural deertongue smoke it is hard to beat.

I had no idea there were so many blends that have deertongue on the market. Now I definitely have to try some.

I tried Imagine from 4noggins based on it's name (and reference to a personal hero of mine, as well as one of my tattoos, but that's for another thread). I really wanted to like it based on the previous information. I unfortunately did not. I did not get any vanilla flavor from it (though I did smell a faint hint of vanilla in the bag). I hope to try "Crooner" to see if it was just the blend that I did not like or if it was the Deertongue that I didn't like. On a side note, if I am ever in a trivia competition, I want smooth on my team...

Fr. Tim,
Go for it. However, I will offer some advice. Deer-Tongue will "ghost-flavor" a pipe. Therefore, I suggest you use a "separate" pipe for it (dedicated pipe). If you enjoy it, you can dedicate that pipe to it. I have two pipes dedicated to Gentleman Caller by C&D. Personally, it is worth buying an inexpensive pipe just for a deer-tongue blend rather than "ghost-flavor" a pipe you have already grown fond of for a particular blend.

A few years ago I bought some blends and some blenders from a guy. In amoungst that was about a Pint jar of deer tongue. I have used it a couple times to enhance a blend I didn't really care for.
In that bunch was also some Latakia and some perique. I still have most of those including the deer tongue. One day I'll play with mixing some more.
Another thing I like mixing with is to cut up some Irish XX twist rope. I cut some up and mix a bit in to make blends stronger. I've not found any blend yet that I didn't like with some rope mixed in.

By the way, Craig Tarler of C&D has confirmed for me that the only flavor additive in GC is "Deer-Tongue" and nothing else as far as flavoring. In my opinion, this is a "natural aromatic blend". If you try it, please use a pipe dedicated to only this blend as it will "ghost-flavor" your pipe! My wife loves this blend.

My father is incredibly fond of deer tongue, particularly the previously mentioned Crooner blend by Cornell&Diehl. I've always enjoyed the vanilla room notes, but when I smoked it myself it reminded me of the rising yeast dough with cinnamon in it. I'm not much of a fan because it is an incredibly strong smoke, and I like light aromatics. I do appreciate the effort to flavor the tobacco with a natural herb rather than chemical additives. Why aren't more herbs utilized this way? Were there any pipe tobaccos of the past that used herbs besides deer tongue? Are there any being made today?

I can't seem to locate this Gentleman Caller by C&D blend, would someone kindly post a link to where it can be purchased?
Thank you.

Go to the source: http://cornellanddiehl.com/Burley_blends

It is listed as a new blend on that page. You can call them to order at this number: (800) 433-0080

I recently popped a tin of Gentleman Caller and I can't stop smoking it. This is an excellent tobacco and is made more interesting with the addition of Perique. I've also tried H&H Capitol Stairs and absolutely love it. Deertongue is definitely something I enjoy in a blend. It imparts something very refreshing in the smoke. The flavor is difficult for me to describe other than to say it adds a sweetness to blends that I've not experienced with aromatics.

Would like to try Gentleman Caller simply to try deer tongue but unfortunately I can't find that particular blend in Switzerland (fortunately, there are many C&D blends that are available here). Also on my list of blends to purchase when I go back to the States in a few months.
Samuel Gawith, Gawith and Hoggarth, Fribourg and Tryer are all readily available here--do these companies make any blends that have deer tongue in them?
Since deer tongue imparts a vanilla-mint-cinnamon (insert flavor here) flavor but is a natural plant, does that qualify Gentleman Caller as an aromatic? Or is it a Burley with a "natural flavor?"

Crooner is another one of theirs that has Deertongue if you can find that one.

Sorry man, not too sure about those but my suggestion would be to go to tobaccoreviews.com and look up those blenders and go through the blends they offer.

It's actually a Virginia/Perique blend BUT its my understanding that many blends with Deertongue are Burley based. I wouldn't necessarily consider them aromatics. Gentleman Caller has no flavoring added.

GC is always in my rotation and has been for years. It reminds me of Half&Half from the 1970's because that blend had deertongue in it at the time. That herb is precious because it is very difficult to find. I read that C&D got as much as possible so they could ensure their deertongue blends could be produced.

Dont chew it.

Deertongue contains coumarins, chemicals that may thin the blood and cause liver damage.
