I bought an ounce of C & D Engine #382 in Feb., curious about Deertongue. My first couple of smokes were really good, the green, herby vanilla taste was readily apparent. I jarred it while I was trying other blends, and recently came back to it thinking it would be a good summer smoke. Either my palette's changed, or the DT is AOL, but the thrill is gone. I don't detect that fresh green scent in the jar or in the bowl. Does anyone have experience with deertongue blends, how long does the fragrance last? Any guesses on the base of #382, Haunted Bookshop or similar?

I’ve never smoked that blend, but I smoke crooner and I sometimes pick deer tongue and blend it with burley. In my experience its flavor and scent are pretty persistent. When a deer tongue blend ages, the tobacco seems to change more than the deer tongue. That said I sometimes hang deer tongue wands—like lavender wands—and after a few years the aroma does fade. So I suppose it is possible it fades eventually in a blend too

I remember well the first time I tried a blend with deer tongue - I don't even recall which blend, but it was some blend that 4noggins sold about 10 or 15 years ago. I have never been so repulsed by a smoke in all of my life. I would rather smoke a giant, sweaty ass. Further, one two minute smoke (that is all I lasted) permanently ghosted a pipe I really liked. Never again. For those who haven't tried it, you have been warned. Now our forum friend Sablebrush, he just loves the shit. He even spreads deer tongue on his salmon bagels in the morning. But his tastebuds are completely shot, so be careful if you decide to give it a whirl.

I wish it faded!
I opened a tin of Gentleman Caller months ago. It still is as potent as day one, maybe more potent.
Im not a fan.

I haven't smoked Cooner I'm not a burley fan, but Gentleman caller and New Market are both deer tongue blends that I like. not for everyday smokes but every now and then they're a nice change of pace.

I’m going to chime in here. My first batch of Crooner knocked my socks off with the deer tongue. I was hooked. I bought another batch online and was left “wanting”…. Same brand… just didn’t have the same punch…. And I agree, the longer it sits, the less deer tongue taste I get… it’s getting sweeter and more aromatic so I would say the other mixtures are overpowering the ‘tongue…. In the future, I won’t buy as much, or keep it as long…. It’s pretty much my everyday anyway.
