Deep Cleaning Cob Pipes

I think many pipe smokers are like this about their pipes in general, briars included.

I'm not one of the many. Cobs for me are throwaway pipes, great for in the shop, doing yard work etc. no big loss if one succumbs to the lawn mower or tractor. Plus they are inexpensive -- so I don't invest much time in care beyond the basics. I do take better care of my briars, meers, mortas.

I have a few cobs and smoke them quite often. My normal routine is to smoke the pipe, let is sit for a bit and then run a spirit soaked wad of paper towel through the bowl after some time. I probably clean the bowl more often than one should but, it’s a cob and they are fairly inexpensive.

What does the sunshine portion do? Also, do you have them sit in indirect sun near a window?

clean pipe w/Everclear and cleaners, and if it’s been used a lot a spell in the sunshine will dry out cob (which soaks up “juices” like a sponge.

As just as a point of clarity, when speaking about cobs I use the terminology MM does, i.e.:
“Stem”=shank that’s inserted/glued to cob
“Bit”=what’s usually known by us as stem
