Well, my jar of Cockstrong finally ran dry and I found myself missing the burley in my lineup.
After MSO's recent burley thread and following the chronicles of Didimauw and the cob, I dug out the box of Carter Hall I "cellared" (read: tossed on the pile) in July.
Ripping the cellophane top off and removing the pouch from the box was very "old school" comfortable, like dragging out the dilapidated slippers your wife ordered destroyed two years ago.
The pouch note is a nostalgic, sweetish tang I recall from my parents' landlord. He smoked Amphora and Captain Black. There's a certain common scent I find in many of the OTC pouches. I've no idea what it is, but I smell it. Maybe a humectant?
The vector of choice for burleys, a Briar Works sitting poker, barely warmed throughout the ordeal.
As resistant as I've been to "aro's", I found the faint cocoa/bourbon thing quite nice. I jumped on it a bit hard on the light up and began to get that sourish burley ciggy taste, but slowing my roll fixed it right up.
The cocoa oscillated from a sweet chocolate milk to a handful of bittersweet chips, both iterations remaining pleasant. The bourbon tones coming and going, I believe are the cause of this. After the half way point, I've been able to ramp up the cadence without evoking the bitterness, which is nice.
Although distinct, those flavors still allowed the burley leaf to get all nutty in my mouth (eww... )
I enjoyed it enough that I have immediately loaded a second bowl, something I don't do often. It's definitely an easy going tobacco with great "all day smoke" potential.
As I hit the third trimester of bowl #2, I'm feeling a mild nic attack between the ears. My only critique so far is that it likes to go out when tamped, likely from my lack of dry time. I got a good 40 minutes from this taller, narrow pipe with a slightly loose pack.
I chose the "type randomly whatever comes to mind" format for this review. Forgive my lack of organization.
I recommend Carter Hall for aro guys who might want less topping, for non-aro guys who are open to just a wee bit of topping, the codger curious and anyone not vehemently opposed to burley.

"Codger curious".
I like to mix Carter Hall with a Lat-heavy blend. It reminds me of the old Middleton's Walnut.

Last night, I was drinking water with my smoke, but thinking how good CH would likely go with the morning coffee.
Now, I can confirm. Carter Hall is the perfect mate for a morning cup o' joe!

CH is a pleasant standby and all-purpose blend. It's durable enough to keep in a vehicle if you forget to pack a blend otherwise. It travels well. Unless you just don't like it, it is entirely likable ... sure is to me.

I like CH. Just by its self, sometimes.

Specially like it to mix with something else I bought to make the something else taste OK to smoke rather than tossing the something else out in the yard.

Will always be with me.

Like Cosmic always says, carter hall is the same while fresh and moist, or old and dry. What he really means is, that it's always delicious!

jaytex, sorry for the hill-speak. Someone recently protested how they didn't like Carter Hall, and we don't hear that often. There is no tobacco everyone likes. It may be weasel wording, but it is also true, which you cannot say of most of the hill-speak. And I'll leave the politics there.

It did not hit my doublespeak filter. Here is how I translated: "Unless for some reason you just hate this blend, it is easy to like." Translation: inoffensive, with some positive qualities.

Did I say that? Ha ha!
Carter Hall also goes well with the aromas of freshly mowed grass, diesel fuel, the mist on the corn in the early morning, and pairs well with Sun Drop or an ice cold Mountain Dew. Outdoorsy! For me, it's a Spring to Summer thing when working outdoors. It's hard to sing it's praises, for me, when there are so many other blends in my house to chose from. But, when headed outside to work, I sling a pouch of Carter Hall into the truck seat and get to it. Not much thinking involved.

Carter Hall strikes me as a mite too sweet, but comparing it to popular Virginia blends, I find myself re-appreciating it for having some depth of flavor. I can only really handle it when mixed with Five Brothers, but there is something thoroughly enjoyable about heading out on a Saturday morning, stopping by the store for some supplies and picking up a packet of Prince Albert or Carter Hall, and then moseying around with an uncomplicated and dessert-like blend in my pipe while I fiddle, muck around, and fidget my way through whatever it is that I am tasked with or trying to enjoy at the time.

Just had a bowl of it in my MM Cob this morning while walking my pup and it was great. Love the slight chocolate hint.

I'm almost to the end of my pouch. As many have said, it's ole reliable. Tastes the same and lights easy from open to empty.

Seems a lot of 'enthusiasts' prefer to have to fiddle with their leaf before smoking it.

Easy pipe smoking just cannot be 'quality' pipe smoking. You have to work for things of value. (seems to be the thought)
Yes, flaked, coined, or plug tobacco has appeal, but these require more time and effort to enjoy, unless you've got the time and the effort is actually a pleasant ritual.
The Codger blends have endured because they're consistent, tasty, and easy to smoke, and they used to be available virtually everywhere, so there's a recognition factor too.

weezle, no offense intended, though I like the image for an editorial image because weasels are to me fascinating little critters who indeed have remarkably flexible spines that can double back on themselves and twist and turn in unfathomable ways. So the weasels are super, but using words in that twisted way not. Also, weasels fight way above their weight and are not to be trifled with.

'Tis the nature of hobbyists.
Some here are involved with the industry, hobbyists, poseurs/hipsters, carpetbaggers, people looking to socialize, fanatics, and combinations of the above.
I think your point is more broadly taken, which is:
It is unwise to disregard something simply because it was easy.
For me, La Brumeuse and Five Brothers are both easy as heck and enjoyable. Same is true of Prince Albert, which I enjoy on a regular basis.

OK, Cap'n Enabler(and company),
I just got my 3 ounces of Angler's Dream.
Need I worry about it ghosting up my burley pipe? Should it go into an aro pipe or cob, or will my burley briar be safe?
Thanks.
