True story!

I can tell you this, man : I own ALL of his official releases in original album cds, plus a Best Of (it was my first) Cd and DvD (both two-disced), plus his first awful but collectible self-titled album ('David Bowie'), and the last Ziggy Stardust Concert (at Hammersmith Odeon), both the collective 2-cd recording, and the DVD (around 27 cds in total)...
Scared ya?

I was really into his music for a while...
Then I discovered Johnny Cash, and got interested in 'real-life' music, rebellious lyrics and all, and left the elite behind!

I think we wont see the likes of Bowie, Jagger, etc. again, in our lifetime. I was listening to Steven Van Zandt talk yesterday about the upcoming Rascals reunion. He said in the late 60's to early 70's, rock and roll reinvented itself every 3-4 months (Bowies Stardust era a fine example). So, i think we've seen the last of the spoiled, selfish, pompous rock star, a little sad.

A real deal rock star died when my second kid was born. I was about as disgusting as they come. Needles and Jim Beam. Falling down on stage and not missing a note. I'm lucky to be alive. lol Here is a couple of bands that my band resembled, but we had never heard of Clutch till people kept telling us we sounded like clutch. They pretty much go off like an old school punk band. Just different style. The second video is the only cover we did but my band sounded like a mix between clutch and the melvins with Motorhead/Slayer to make it disgusting. Fun times, Great days. I lived through them. Here are a couple of videos of real rock bands.

Cobain was indeed the last rip-up-your-hotel, smash things, addict, go out in a blaze-of-glory rock star.
The new indie generation doesn't have aspirations to fame, therefore the term "star" doesn't apply to people like Radiohead, etc

Some album covers of bands nowadays portray the "rock star" lifestyle with scantily clad surgically enhanced women, beer bottles strewn about and motorcycles everywhere. You may read about some debauchery in a Guitar Player magazine. See Hinder, Buck Cherry, earlier Shinedown etc. Still not as infamous as bands a few decades ago.

Lots of real rock-stars left, you just have to look beyond the tripe that gets played on the radio. Lots of awesomely self-destructive partying in the punk and metal scenes still. I can tell you with a certainty that the guys from NOFX still like to rip shit up.

I think the term rock star is misused and misunderstood. It isn't about drugs or self destruction.

It's about being who you are regardless of what it does to you or what other people think, these people just happen to write music and then get famous.
The media then force a 1 sided view of this person onto the public because smashing up hotel rooms is more interesting than "after the gig they all went back stage and had a pot of tea and relaxed"

Phil Anselmo is still alive and kickin! He still rocks out hard with his newer band (DOWN). For those of you who dont know that name, he was the lead singer for Pantera. That guy is amazing and still gets up and goes nuts. But as for new bands, the vast majority of them are all pansies!

I was actually thinking of Phil when I made my post above. I seem to recall from one of the videos either Phil or Vinnie noting that Dime couldn't play a riff sober - but if he had to be 'carried out on stage you knew he was going to slay'.

Lemmy is god. Clutch rules, but they don't strike me as party animals. Phil is the role model for drunk America.
You have to look to grind bands and crust bands for the real deal. I've spent some time roading before, and these bands will survive on beast ice and mac-n-cheese. And will party from coast to coast. These new bands are just a disgrace to music, and downright take the balls out of rocking. No one riffs anymore. And that's the problem. Bring back the riff, and you bring back the insanity.
