Death of the Rock Star

Are there any rock stars left? It seems to me hip-hop has taken the reigns of over-the-top decadence that was once the realm of the rock star. I don't mean pop stars, "jam bands" or 3 chord happy-ass fake punk bands that sing about snowboarding. I mean whiskey-chuggin, chain-smokin, farmers'daughter-impreagnatin rock stars. Are they a thing of the past?

Most of them are now popping viagra seeping tea and contemplating their next reality series! Although just like how you can't avert your eyes from a train wreck I watched Gene Simmons every week without fail. At least its not a soap opera right? LOL

Probably because of the 27 club. Of course I am a little young to know the days you are referring to. I do however have a love for music of all eras. I am also a huge vinyl collector.

I think the last rock star was probably Kurt Cobain, even though he wasn't a fan of being a star. There are rockers who are highly respected and loved in the genre right now like Shaun Morgan of Seether and Brent Smith of Shinedown. But, there isn't really a rock star in today's music as there was in the 60s, 70s, and 80s like Ozzy, Lennon, Keith Richards, Jimmy Paige, David Lee Roth etc. I think it's mostly because for some reason rock music doesn't get mainstream play. Mainstream stations these days are mostly into bubble gum pop teen acts or hip hop acts. I don't even like today's hip hop as compared to the hip hop of the early to mid 90s. It's gotten very label made and pre-fabricated bland boring and dull. The truth is to find good music today you do have to go underground or go old school to bands/artists from the 90s or earlier.

That is why you have to look at the underground stuff. There are some great artists out there but I too am sick of the bubble gum pop scene.

Whew, I'm having a tough time coming up with a new "Rock Star". Last one I remember is Axl Rose or Eddy Vetter from Pearl Jam. But neither of them are relevant any more. Maybe Jack White?

Jack White isn't a traditional rock star but he has just as much talent. Probably my favorite living guitarist.

It's a great question. Not much for new artists with talent, a ton of charisma and a some danger.

We seem to be in a lull period for good music in general. Everything is rehashed and not done as well as the originals. I think any classic artist is still relavant today. I guess we will just have to watch the rocks stars get older like we all are.

Cool topic, never thought about it until now...most bands make it to go "commercial" to make money and get fame, as a long time ago, it was about getting high, drunk and getting laid...I think those days of the "Rock Star"as the topic suggested are dead, unless, as others has suggested, you look to the underground scene.

As a Rock 'N' Roll, Country, and Rockabilly fan, I would tell you that most of the true stars died along with the Man In Black in 2003, and the last of them live on with Jerry Lee (who was due to play here in Greece in 2010, and cancelled his European tour due to health issues....... WHYYYYYYYYYYY? I have saved the advertisement!).
Leaving nostalgia aside though, I think there still are some good acts, but the real thing to which you seem to be referring, might indeed be a thing of the past...
