D&R have always been a favorite, stocked up on my favorite blends back in 2021, though I wish I would have bought more Picayune...

In any case, I thought about seeing if there were any D&R blends for sale second hand and discovered that Pipes and Cigars were still selling some of their blends??? Quickly bought some Windsail Original...

My question is, does P&C just have old stock left from before D&R closed shop, or is some other company producing their blends? Are they the same tobaccos from the same sources/growers? Curious.

A majority portion was bought so it still exists under new leadership. The old factory was closed down, production moved and a good number of blends discontinued.

My only experience is I liked TAPS VIP, which was discontinued, and I liked Rowland Gold, which continued on a little bit after the buyout but was nothing like the tin I enjoyed from 2019, and then ultimately was discontinued too.

I can't speak to anything still in production and if it is different.

D&R is definitely still alive and well. Three Sails is a blend of theirs (meant to be a clone of the old cigarettes Three Castles) and it’s my favorite tobacco to roll into a cigarette.
D&R is neither alive or well.
It is no longer owner and operated by Mark Ryan, and no longer in the same location, so it’s definitely a hard reset.

I’m aware it’s no longer owned by Mark Ryan but aren’t they still around? I’m able to buy their tobaccos whenever I want. Am I just buying up the last of old stock or something?

I’m not privy as to if any D&R tobacco was sold along with the D&R IP. I do know that production was moved to an RYO factory, and that Mark is not their leaf buyer.

You're buying tobaccos with the same names. Mark sold his recipes and methodology, but that doesn't require the purchaser to use any of it.

I’ve not noticed changes in the Three Sails that I’ve smoked spanning the years from when Mark owned the company until now. Could it change in the future? Sure. I can’t speak for other blends from D&R but Three Sails is still fantastic. The only other blend I’ve regularly smoked from D&R is Two Timer but I haven’t had that since Mark Ryan owned the company. I wonder if they’re still using leaf components that Mark Ryan sourced himself in their Three Sails blend. If not, the new ownership seems to be doing a damn good job sourcing leaf from where I sit. Only time will tell.

I believe I’ve only had the “Two Daughters” versions of Three Sails and Ryback.
Both good for the money, and I guess if they’re not as good as the true D&R originals it’s probably best I don’t know that I’m missing.

Daughters & Ryan blends are still quite good since the sale, in my experience. Three Sails seems relatively unchanged, but while Ryback and Ryback Gold used to be RYO blends that you could easily enjoy as a cigarette they are now much stronger and rougher around the edges; really only suited to smoking in a pipe unless you've got lungs of steel.

There is something a little funny about an RYO company buying a pipe tobacco brand that used to be something you could roll into cigarettes and turning them into "pipe only" blends. 😅

I used to smoke a lot of Three Castles. Three Sails isn't even close. It doesn't even look similar. Don't get me wrong. I appreciate Three Sails just fine, but Three Castles was a top shelf, premium, golden sweet virginia.
