I've gravitated towards more traditional English shapes and have not really looked into Danish pipes, but I was looking at the Danish Pipe Shop site and am thinking about buying a high end one at some point. Manduela pipes --particularly the bulldogs (SP has a few that were sold on the site and they look incredible) -- caught my eye and Suhr and Former as well. There are so many makers, and I haven't delved into the history and supposed hierarchy much.

I'm not planning on buying one anytime soon, and not sure if I will ever drop big bucks on one, but generally what do people think of the different prominent makers? I wonder why there is no "sticky" thread above for Danish Pipes?

The Danes is where the whole idea of artisan pipemakers comes from... Suhr, Sixten Ivarsson, Preben Holm, Pipe-Dan, W. Ø. Larsen etc. Poul Rasmussen, Sven Knudsen, Anne Julie, Lars Ivarsson, Nanna Ivarsson, Tao, Poul Ilsted, Poul Winsløw, Tom Eltang, Teddy Knudsen, Tonni Nielsen, Hans Former Nielsen, Benni Jørgensen... funny names with funny markings on the letters.
but generally what do people think of the different prominent makers?
That is a HUGE question. I love the way the Danes exaggerate the tilts, angles, lengths, and proportions of their pipe designs. They have a more raw design sense, as opposed to the Italians with their more sleek and sexy proportions, or the French/English styles. To me the Danes have a more rustic designs style that brings to mind Vikings and hard winters living on a bunch of rocks.

I for one work 15min from their shop.. but like classic simple shapes (with 9mm filter) ... so not that much for me. Now Manduela pipes are amazing and special but out of the range I am willing to spend for a pipe. Plus tobacco is so much more expensive since the last danish tax increases that I only order in Germany now. Will need to find some reason to visit the store soon and support them. Such an institution here in Copenhagen and nice people!

Browsing through the different makers, many of which Cosmic listed above, two stood out to my novice eye -- Anne Julie and Manduela. Two of the most expensive -- Anne Julie I wouldn't buy if they were 1/10th the price, incredibly ugly to my eye. But the Manduela pipes have real appeal, to me the designs look like something special -- a synthesis of old and new. Also liked the more understated look of some of the Hans Former Nielsen pipes. Maybe one day...

Manduela pipes tend to be quite small. Be sure to check out the measurements.
