I typically like Va/Pers but this one seems to be pretty much tasteless. Could I have received a "off" plug or something? Could it be too moist? Kind of hard to tell the moisture content of the plug because of its density but seems to burn fine. FYI I've been slicing flakes then cubing it. I get just the faintest whisper of sweet Virginia.

The flavour is muted for sure. For me, what can be tasted, is more on the savory side than the sweet. It always reminded me of Germains Brown Flake, it has that peppery virginia taste. I personally like it, but I get why this could be a let down.
Not going to lie, It's not was I was expecting from a 25$ tobacco before tax lol. Welp I have 3 more plugs of it...sigh. I bought it based on reviews and the fact its been out of stock since I started. Maybe when I get a 100 post I'll trade it away on here. Thanks for the reply.

I totally agree is a muted blend at first. Dice and rub some out, let it have some time in the jar. I have really enjoyed it one it's own, as well as using it to 'boost' some other blends ala @Sigmund 's suggestions. Or trade it. ;)

Im not convinced that its recovering cost. I think someone sees profit and is happy to charge that price. You cant blame someone for wanting to make a profit but its high. That is about what we get charged for C&D and GLP. It doesnt cost an extra 10 bucks added to RETAIL to get the job done.

I haven’t tried SD yet. I’ve got a plug that’s several years old in the cellar, so this is disappointing to hear. I tend to like medium-bodied blends, so hopefully I’ll enjoy it. If not, I’ve got plenty of Telegraph Hill

It's alright if you like that sort of thing. I have a pot load of the stuff I got in a trade with someone on here years ago. It really doesn't do an awful lot for me but YMMV and I have met folks who think it is the greatest thing ever produced!

Several here got into a group buy of Salty Dogs in 2014 directly from Germany for $9/plug. I got 20 of them and think they're fantastic. There have been blend and consistency variation reports over the following years though. Some have commented on getting softer plugs but the ones I had were very dense and difficult to cut.

My experience with Salty Dogs has varied. I mean even from the same plug, in the same pipe.

I'm not claiming that that is the tobacco's fault -- it may be me.
(But for whatever it's worth, most tobaccos are pretty predictable for me, time after time.)

Sometimes it tastes like stewy, fermentive dark fruit.
Other times, I don't get that at all, and instead get spicy molasses notes (somewhat reminiscient of Heinrich’s DSF, but without the DFK).
And yet other times, I get mostly hot air ... maybe a little generic sweetness, but not much flavor to identify.

Sometimes I think that Salty Dogs may be my favorite tobacco, while other times I wonder if it's even worth smoking again.

Again, this anomaly may be me?
