+1 acrylic stems, if you can use them. I know some find them too hard against their teeth, but if you can use them, their durability is the right material for smoking outdoors. Otherwise, you will put up with some oxidation and may just have to replace some stems. Acrylic stems with smaller pipes are less felt on teeth, and you can get full-length smokes with smaller pipes with flake/plug/coin/rope blends. They just burn slower, mostly.

I've replaced some acrylic stems with ebonite. The acrylics just felt cheap and unnatural.

You need to bind up those sulphur bits with something or they'll grab on to o2 and spoil your stem. I use Burt's Bee's lip balm and just the whole stem down with it. I use unscented cause you know, all those chemicals in odor's cause cancer :roll:

I keep original black label chap stick in my pipe bag. It’s inexpensive and doesn’t take up much space.
