Cutty Madness. Quarterfinals Match 3.

Here we have the ultra-light pencil shank cross-cut blast sitter with black bamboo against the classic ridged red blast with silver spigot turned by the carver and tortoise shell bakelite stem.

Some of these pipes are distinctive and the carver may be recognizable to many. Please try to avoid guessing the carver in the comments so as not to influence any voters, but feel free to comment on what you like and don't like about each one. Apparently they have done away with the poll feature here, so please cast your vote in a comment and I will count them when the threads begin to naturally slow down.

See, now the first one looks too busy to me. And, again, I go for the simple spigot. Although that blast is spectacular in the first one.

"1" looks more fun, but "2" is a lot more cutty, although a bit more dull. Still it is a nice pipe, and the vote goes to "2".

Very tough to vote against #1 but I did it.

This is a difficult decision because they are so different, and because neither of them are anywhere near my favorites out of these 16. But I'm going with #1 because it's so unique, and also because a cutty just doesn't look right to me with a spigot.

Contra my traditionalist instincts, I'm going to say #1 this time.

Something about the spigot on the second pipe feels out of place on that piece -- somehow juxtaposed.

Whereas #1 is aesthetically seamless. Whether you like the vibe or not, it is visually cohesive art.

If it were up to me #1 would be one of the finalists. The blast is amazing, the stem and shank are fabulous and it sits balanced on the foot. I think I looks natural like it just got plucked off a tree in some forest or something. - I wish pipes like this grew on trees.
