Since plug is only a fraction of my pipe smoking, I don't want to devote space to a plug cutter, though they are gorgeous to behold. So I just use a folding knife, but recommend carbon steel blades for holding an edge for this purpose. They darken, stain, and don't look as pretty as stainless steel, but they are usually superior knives.

For those plug n cake only smokers, with plenty of room, why not find a meat slicer.... Saw one today in a little restaurant where we had lunch and it was gleaming!

I learned a lot in this thread..excellent. Ive just been using the pocket knife I carry with me wherever I go...

Clean poultry shears or medic scissors to cut and then I run it through an herb grinder.
